Movies That Should Be Made
Posted by Brad Pineau on February 1st, 2004 at 5:19 pm AST     [12306 views]

I had a lot of "me" time today... so I thought I'd pop Grand Theft Auto 3 into the Playstation to get a little fun gaming action. As I was playing it, I thought to myself, "This game would make an awesome movie."

Then it occurred to me that motion picture studios make a lot of really crappy movies (ahem, The Perfect Score, ahem). Why make movies that you know will suck when there are so many other good ideas out there?

So, I have compiled a quick list of 10 awesome movie ideas that I would love to see. There are many other ideas I have thought of, but we'll start with the first 10 I thought of while writing this article.
  • Hobbit (Prequel to LOTR)

  • Wayne's World 3

  • Ghostbusters 3

  • Die Hard 4 (hopefully will be made in 2005)

  • Thor (Marvel Comics)

  • Lost in Space 2

  • American History X 2

  • Grand Theft Auto

  • Planet of the Apes 2 (Sequel to the 2001 version)

  • Legend of Zelda

Lot of sequals in there.

Ender's Game is the one I am really waiting for. Probly my favorite book of all time.

Posted by s8u8k on February 2nd, 2004 at 2:02 am AST

YEAH interesting
I can see Grand Theft Auto getting done..
Maybe even Getaway.
Die Hard 4 is on the cards i heard..
Another MADMAX could happen too
A movie i think should be done, based on a brilliant young people's book, "Bridge To Terebithia".. done properly it could be a masterpeice for all ages.
There are plenty of novels dying to be turned into movies.. just go to your local bookstore.
'Cats' : the next musical movie.

You complain about the movie industry making a lot of crappy movies, and of having no good ideas...
...and then you offer up these 10 "ideas" (filled with sequels/prequel and 'based on') as an alternative? These aren't ideas for movies. These are marketing campaigns.

Posted by Ben on February 2nd, 2004 at 2:38 pm AST [email] [website]

Would it kill somebody to make a good movie about Vikings? Or Attila the Hun? How about Ghengis Khan? the USA netowrk did a reasonably good made for tv flick caled Attila. Surely someone could do it for the big screen.

Posted by Bloggerman on February 2nd, 2004 at 8:06 pm AST [email] [website]

Listen here, Rob MacD... First, the movie industry DOES make stupid movies and you can't deny that.

Second, if you read my article above, I say "So, I have compiled a quick list of 10 awesome movie ideas that I would love to see". (Movies I, Brad Pineau, would like to see.) So what about this article makes you lash out like that? Whether they are sequels, prequels, or 'based on' movies, as you call them... I would still love to see them.

Third, when you say "These are marketing campaigns"... of course they are... all movies are these days. That's like saying "They just make movies to make money." Duh.

Posted by MeanMrMonkey on February 3rd, 2004 at 5:56 am AST [email]

Who writes this stuff? Your ideas in this article are absolutely awful.

Waynes World 3 - Why? WW2 was absolutely horrible and WW1 is barely watchable now. It doesn't hold up over time at all. If this film was made, noone would be interested. It would be career suicide for Mike Myers who has obviously moved on to better things (except for the dreadful Cat in the Hat movie).

Ghostbusters 3 - The second one was pretty bad. Bill Murray has evolved into a much better actor. Another career killer. Why would he do it? Dan Ackroyd is probably foaming at the mouth to make this one. Why not? He had no problem damaging the Blues Brothers legacy with that dreadful sequel. He could replace Bill Murray's character with the guy who played Screech.

Lost in Space 2 - The first one was commercial crap.

American History X 2 - This is probably your worst idea. One of the main characters died at the end of the first one. How could you ever continue this storyline? The first movie was brilliant. Instead of riding the coattails of the first one, writers should be trying to think of an ORIGINAL idea that is of that quality.

Grand Theft Auto - This is a great game because it borrows a lot of elements from great films and allows you to control it like a movie. If you made it into a movie, it would play like a low budget b-movie that you see on HBO at 1 am any night of the week.

Planet of the Apes 2 - This remake was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Why do we need a sequel? Seriously, dude. You seem to know something about movies. Do you ever watch anything good?

Most of your ideas are sequels. Why can't anybody be creative anymore? Thor was actually a pretty good idea. I'll back you on that one. The Hobbit would also be a good idea if the LOTR crew was backing it, but Peter Jackson said he doesn't want to do it. Sequels are never as good as the originals because you lose the element of surprise. The LOTR series was great because each part was part of the whole story. Too many bad movies are made because they try to tack on a second film that wasn't part of the original story. Seriously, think about it. In the entire history of film, how many sequels were as good as the original? These are the only ones I could think of:

The Empire Strikes Back (easily the best of the series)
The Godfather Part 2 (not better, but just as good as Part 1)
Aliens (the first one was great, but the 2nd one brought it to another level)
Terminator 2 (groundbreaking special fx, and a much bigger budget)

If you can think of others, e-mail me at rgiro73@msn.com. I love a good debate. Until next time, keep your head out of your ass.

Well, MeanMrMonkey, as far as I know, my head is certainly not in my ass. I'm a hardcore movie lover who loves his movies, and I'm terrible sorry you don't agree with my ideas. Sorry you didn't like Wayne's World, Planet of the Apes, Lost in Space, etc, but I loved them... and would love to see sequels made.

And as far as American History X 2 goes... the end of the 1st movie left it wide open for a sequel... it was BEGGING for a sequel. Edward Norton's brother died, yes... this will be a turning point in Norton's character's life. I'd love to see what he decides to do with his life afterwards... maybe he changes his life for the better, or maybe he spirals down with his hatred.

And yes, of course, creativity is wonderful... but the mere nature of this article doesn't really allow me to list original ideas here. I mean, I'm not a writer... I'm a software developer. What the fuck do you expect me to come up with? My ideas will either based on sequels/prequels, or already existing books/shows/games etc.

Go get YOUR head out of YOUR ass, and why not list some ideas that YOU think would make good movies. See if you can come up with some ORIGINAL ideas.

Posted by Glasseyerod on February 3rd, 2004 at 10:24 am AST [email]

I will admit I was not overly impressed with this list, and when I saw someones comment that the list was all remakes, sequels, or based on some other work I thought yeah, try something origanal Brad. Now that I think of it, if it is going to be a list of movie titles, it can only be unoriginal movies (some of which could be great movies).

1) Three Monkey from Tibet
2) Apalachine Showdown
3) Ei8ht
4) Girls Night Out
5) Operation Yellow Rose
6) Gary
7) Giants
8) Little League
9) Under the Bridge
10)We are all Sheep

There that is my list. It is original, but what the hell are any of these movies about.

Posted by Marc Jubainville on February 3rd, 2004 at 12:35 pm AST

Goodness, there's a lot of hostility here, I mean by all means, we're talking about movies. I think people have to step back and realize that everyone will have their own opinions and it's fair to criticize people's opinions, but there are ways to do so without attacking them.

Anyhow, in my opinion, some of your ideas seem like good ones, i.e. Legend of zelda could be interesting, GTA3, the hobbit, Thor, but I mean, I am a gamer, so evidently, many people would probably shun some of those ideas, but then again, I want another final fantasy movie...

But suffice to say, I would not go see a wayne's world 3 movie myself, but there are always people who will, I mean, people went to see Kangaroo Jack, so by all means...

Anyhow, the real point here is that Glasseye's movie list rocks! I hope all of those ideas get made!
But he left out one great idea: "Bloggerman: The Movie!"

Actually speaking of movies, did anyone see the butterfly effect? Apparently it got bad reviews, but I really liked it...

Laters,
Marc

I need a Wayne's World 3...I live off the other 2...no matter what anyone says...

Posted by Brazilian on February 3rd, 2004 at 5:39 pm AST

I would like to see the Hobbit, but i doubt that it would be good as
LOTR.And only one director could make this movie:Peter Jackson.
American History X 2 would probably suck.Gta,the movie,is a great
idea, but here in Brazil,we may have problems, because the game is
forbidden here(although it doesn't make much difference).
One movie that should have a remake is Godfather, but just the possibility of see Leonardo DiCaprio in this picture makes me sick!
And C.S.I,the movie, could be a Oscar picture or the worse Bruckheimer picture since Canguru Jack.

Posted by bulldogyank29 on February 4th, 2004 at 6:45 pm AST [email]

Why not make a movie on the fall of Rome or better yet a biopic on Caesar. Another option could be A movie about the MOgolian empire with Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan.

Posted by Brazilian on February 4th, 2004 at 8:35 pm AST

It is not a bad idea.I also would love to see a movie about the first World War,but a realistic one,not the traditional american patriotic crap.

"Tony Hawk's ProSkater". I'm also waiting for Indiana Jones 4.

American History X 2

Ugh, sorry but BAD idea...

Posted by Rob MacD on February 6th, 2004 at 3:22 pm AST [website]

My post was in reference to this line in your original post: "Why make movies that you know will suck when there are so many other good ideas out there?"

I made the assumption that you were implying that your list was an example of 'good ideas', as well as an example of movies you'd like to see. In fact, I still assume that.

I cannot, obviously, argue with your taste in movies. That is yours alone. I can, however, argue the concept of what makes a 'good idea'.

It seems to me that many of the titles in your list of movies you'd like to see contradicts your question of why make movies that will suck.

It is that apparent contradiction that I question. Not your right to like crappy movies.

Posted by Carlos on February 6th, 2004 at 8:58 pm AST

This classics should be adapted:
Ulisses,by James Joyce,The Process,by Franz Kafka,
Crime and Punishment and The Karamazov Brothers,by Fiodor Dostoievski.

Posted by Alan on February 7th, 2004 at 8:53 pm AST [email] [website]

I say Thor as well. WIth the silver surfer and Fantastic Four involved as well. Set in 1968 New York.

Posted by Brazilian on February 11th, 2004 at 11:37 am AST

If you're talking about adaptations of the classics,i suggest "The Postumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas",by Machado de Assis. The greatest book of portuguese language, and according to some experts, the first modern novel.Directed of course by "he in this life": Woody Allen.

Posted by Brazilian on February 11th, 2004 at 11:44 am AST

Just a correction,it's "Posthumous",and has also another name in English,"Epitaph of a small winner".

Posted by Anonymous on March 14th, 2004 at 7:09 pm AST

with the exception of the hobbit and planet of the apes 2 your list sucks and your an idiot.

"And as far as American History X 2 goes... the end of the 1st movie left it wide open for a sequel... it was BEGGING for a sequel. Edward Norton's brother died, yes... this will be a turning point in Norton's character's life. nortons character already was changing his life for the better and him going back to his old life would be stupid as hell and unbelievable.

Posted by DiamondbacK on March 15th, 2004 at 5:24 am AST [email]

I like the ideas based on computer games and the Waynes World 3 but not Planet of the Apes. That is awful =)

Posted by Chris on March 15th, 2004 at 5:57 pm AST

I agree Diamondback, Planet of the Apes was horrible. I think they're already making The Hobbit. Die Hard is just plain horrible. Grand Theft Auto would be cool to see but won't happen. I did hear however a possible Metal Gear Solid movie.

Posted by The Guy from Rio on March 15th, 2004 at 9:21 pm AST

The Planet of the Apes was Burton's worse picture.Completely awful,
except by Tim Roth.

Actually, I'm pretty sure someone is working on the zelda movie. It sounded too good to be true at first, but I saw an advertisement for it in some videogame store. Her are a few ideas for movies I thought would be cool.

1. Ghostrider
2.doom
3.natural born killers 2
4.debbie does detroit
5.killer clowns from space vs. killer tomatoes ( why not let two horrible ideas detroy themselves?)

Waynes World 3

Got another one, since Sylvester Stallone wants to bring his career back on track. Don't make another Rocky, but another Demolition Man. The original is still one ofmy favorites.

I totally agree with Brad, the ledgend of Zelda Orcirina of time would make the best movie ever, and after reading junkies reply i can't belive they might be doing it!!! I think Ledgend of Zelda has such a great story line but I think it would be better if I was real life and not animatied, unless the animation was very realistic but I would prefer real life.

Nelson Mandela- I heard possibilities of Morgan Freeman pursuing this in the future
The Beatles
Bob Dylan
Jimi Hendrix
Catcher In The Rye
A movie about Robert Kennedy
Martin Luther King Jr.

Posted by Deer Hunter (AKA Rob Fowler) on February 12th, 2005 at 3:29 am AST

A biopic and Martin Luther King would be a welcome project. So would:

-An actually decent adaptation of the Scottish-themed book by Robert Louis Stevenson's KIDNAPPED.

-A remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea starring Alfed Molina as Captain Nemo.

- Biographies on Leonardo Divinchi told in an original way like the film AMADEUS, which used jealousy as a theme.

- A film about the ties between family members of Roman factions (an idea I've had for a while).

- A new WW1 film is needed, we've overused WW2.

Posted by Deer Hunter (AKA Rob Fowler) on February 12th, 2005 at 3:32 am AST

Oh, and a film about Genghis Khan.

Ok I know you all probably already hate me for doing this but I have a few suggestions for story ideas if anybody wants to hear it so hear they are and tell meifany are interesting.

Story Idea #1: If any if you go to the 2005 Oscars article I posted my screenplay Mother, Dearest about a mother who hates her child.

Story Idea #2: The lost childof Atlantis is found on the shores of the local deep pond in Newtown.

Story Idea #3: Millions of people comeoverfrom across the country claiming a place called ROck Canyon where everyone is nice but that small town which they so happily live in changes who they are in the real world.

Story Idea #4: How about a woman gets an abortion and then sees that the baby she just killed was going to be the messiah. the

Story Idea #5: Satan's demon comes up to earth to kill the coming of god's first child from a school girl Mary Freeman.

Story Idea #6: A man who had an image of the perfect women in college is startled when he sees her on the streets shopping learning that he has the ability to see the nicest people in the world. But he can also see some of the worst. (horror?)

Story Idea #7: Scientists discover that a past war back when there were only apes caused the creation of the first ever man.

I know you think my story's suck but if you like any or have any I'll be glad to help right. (I'm desperate to write a good story.)

Posted by Stanley Kubrick on March 9th, 2005 at 3:33 pm AST

The should make a movie from the book Joe College by Tom Perotta and have Alexander Payne direct it.

Posted by Andrew Hacker on March 10th, 2005 at 10:37 pm AST [email]

He probably wouldn't like it but a movie about Marlon Brando would be fascinating (at least for big fans like me). Actually for anyone, like him or hate him, the guy led an eventful life and because he influenced so many actors a movie about him seems appropriate. An interesting question is who would play him. Johnny Depp? Also, who would direct? Scorcese?

But if you're gonna make it, make it good, not just a "run of the mill" biography about the acting, the womanizing and his son's scandal but also about his social interests (and perhaps some sort of analysis of his very unique and perhaps a bit
strange personality). In fact, the movie could be centered around a psycho-analysis by someone from the world beyond (given that he apparently received extensive psycho-analysis in real life).

It would be a very difficult task I think but its a project with tremendous potential.

How about "Three amigos Two" where THEY are using real bullets, but their new nemesis--the evil El Governator (who is back)--is really an actor, his henchmen Los Minutemen aren't actually effective, and the singing Bush is resurrected to save him.

Or what about Matrix 3. Here, there would actually be an interestingly written story completing the trilogy.

Silence of the Lambs negative 2. Lecter sits in his cell and talks to the walls and bars about eating habits.

Bowling for Columbine: the Extended Version. Charlton Heston explains all those weird, racist comments he makes.

Posted by Jamal Essayah on May 31st, 2005 at 10:44 pm AST [email]

I have to agree with Rob MacD that all of your ideas so far are marketing campaigns and would not be quality movies. They're not very original (all sequels, prequels, or spinoffs) and they wouldn't even make good movies in the first place. They should definitly make a really good Viking movie. It's been a long time since we've had one, but then Beowulf is coming out quite soon (with Gerard Butler). They should make a complete biopic of the life of Napoleon Bonaparte (from the very beginning to his death on the island of Elba). It could be a really cool historical epic that would be a great piece of education and entertainment. Then, they should make a really good movie about The Odyssey. The last one was a long time ago, and with today's technology, it could be really awesome. And it should be really faithful to the original book, so that it can also be used for educational purposes and be a great homage to the famous piece of literature. Then, they should turn The Catcher in the Rye into a movie. If it's faithful, accurate, and with a great cast, it could be a really really good movie, considering how good the book was, and again, could be used for educational purposes (who in high school has not read The Catcher in the Rye). It could be high schooler's reward for finishing the book at the end of the unit. Then, they should make a movie about the involvement of Ford and other American companies in the Nazi party during WWII. It would be very controversial and would be very educationally worth wile for US History teachers. And finally, they should make a movie about The Zimmerman Telegram, the coded message that was sent to Mexico by Germany and intercepted by Britain during WWI, asking the Mexican Government to help Germany in their fight in return for Texas and California back to Mexico. This was the ultimate factor in bringing the United States into the war. But that's just a few ideas.
