ez-D: The Disposable DVD

Test locations that are selling movies on ez-D formats are reporting that the ez-D concept is about as disposible as the ez-D product. It turns out that sales of the ez-D are turning out to be unbelievably low. Wow... what a surprise... I didn't see this coming...
The ez-D is a DVD disc that you buy for $6 USD, watch it, and 48 hours later the readable side turns black and unreadable. The idea came from Flexplay, and was financially backed by Disney.
A DVD disc that you throw out? Why would anyone buy this? Why not go rent a DVD for cheaper... or spend a little more and buy a real DVD and own it forever?
On June 4th of this year, Michael Eisner (CEO of Disney) said that the disposable DVD project is an idea that "probably won't work". What I don't understand, is if he didn't think it would work, why would he invest millions and millions of dollars in an idea that he knew would flop regardless?

That is one of the worst ideas i have heard for a while. I really dont know how ideas like those make it to production. .... market testing please.
What I love about these X hour valid files is that it is impossible to block users from cracking this stuff. Reason being that at some point the file has to be sent to hardware for display/playing at which point it is possible to grab the signal and to convert it to whatever format you want.
Someone does have to run through a filter app so it has to be bought at least once but still .. easy to crack this stuff up .. and there ya go free files again .. woot.

Wow, our disposable world as hit a new low. In a day and age when we should be worried about saving the planet by cutting down on our garbage, we seem to be doing quite the opposite.
I can't get over how many things are one use these days. Sure, the little disposable camera was a great idea, but a toss away DVD? And what's the purpose? To please your lazy selves. It's nuts. But this is the nut on the top of all the others.. hehehe, I weep for us, I really do..

This is a stupid idea! I would never buy one of these disks unless I knew of a way to exploit it and make it not turn black!
Why buy an EZ-d, when u can rent a movie (a new one) for at most $4 dollars from blockbuster. and cracking has never been easier.. if u know what ur doing.. and even for those who have no experience.. in this day and age all u have to do is point and click. get "smartripper" and "flask v6" and maybe a bitrate calc. and ur set. encode with the right codec(filter) and use another program to burn to ur own dvd-r, or use a little bit more complex software and burn to a cd-r and play on any dvd player. BTW -- want great quality printer in for half the price. dont pay 50+ at office depot/max or any other retail store.. most all brands carried and 100% guaranteed. visit www.charlestonink.com now and have your ink within three days. Hacking it sounds easy enough. Immediately after opening, quickly paint the label side with polyurethane sealant from your local hardware store.
This will freeze the oxidation process in its tracks, and the disc probably will not degrade like it's supposed to. :)

Hmmm...? I'd say it's a flawed concept. It'll never catch on. And who's on board at this point? Only Flexplay and Disney. And who's on the horizon to come aboard? Nobody. Nobody at all. It's Disney's and only Disney. Besides, I was at a Super Market recently and on the front of the box they had an offer with a free DVD movie inside. I don't remember all the titles, but there was like, 5 different ones. 'Spy Kids' was one of them. Now I (((don't))) know if it was just the original movie or if it included the "extras", but I (((do))) know I can get a movie and an entire snack for like, $5 maximum. The movie will play forever. Hmmm...? And let's talk about "extras", shalll we? Are there any on this ez-D concept? If the answer is no, then why spend a couple dollars more only getting the movie and nothing else when I can go to Blockbuster for example and get the movie and all the "extras" for $2 cheaper... even if I do have to return it in 48 hours. Nope, won't fly! Enjoy your space on the shelves of the museum of failed products sitting next to *ahem* Clear Pepsi, New Coke and dolls marketed to boys. lol Uncle Walt, spring back to life and save your company from Eisner(even though this time it's not his fault)!!!

I must admit I hate piracy too...in fact I hate all forms of dishonesty, greed, corruption and injustice.
There is one distinct problem here - What is piracy? Most govt. maritime laws are probably very specific about sea going piracy but that cant be applied to our digital world...

Around a decade ago I got a portable CD player with 10 sec anti skip for around $80. It gave up the ghost a few months ago. I got a new one for $30, and it plays mp3 format and has 45 sec anti skip plus all the features of the last one.
For 36% of the cost, I got a better piece of hardware.
When I got the first portable a typical CD prob. cost around $13 ~ $14...now new main stream CD's are approaching $20.
CD's have been getting cheaper to make since they were introduced in the late 80s.
But the price keeps going up...why? If you were to investigate recording contracts for the last 20 years or so you would find out that many artists are barely receiving vinyl royalties for thier efforts.
The U.S. Federal govt. in 1970 introduced a great piece of legislation named the RICO Act. http://www.ricoact.com/
It is very likely that the constituent companies of the MPAA and RIAA are in violation of the RICO act.
They have used their control of the distribution chain in an organized crime fashion to keep CD and video sales prices artificially high and there-by abused the consuming public's right to fair trade. This is nothing short of mafia style extortion.
The RICO Act allows for civil suits...instead of protesting the RIAA supeonas violating civil rights, perhaps the RICO act could be pursued?
For that matter in the true interests of the pursuit of justice I think we should add the following items to a "class action suit" set of nation and worldwide RICO act deliveries:
All finiancial institution penalty and service fees. (Creditors, ATM fees, NSF fees, all of these charges are very suspect. example - you can bounce a $2.00 check and be charged $30.00 - thats usury!)
Any organization pursuing overseas tax breaks while maintaining operations and distributions in the U.S.A. and occupied territories. Any organization hiring overseas labor or shifting labor operations overseas that fail to exhaust the full potential of the U.S. Citizen workforce at home.
(With the number of non U.S. Citizens being issued work VISA's I cant understand why we have even 0.5% unemployment!)
Any organization who's highest paid employee (all forms of compensation considered) earns more than 300% of the lowest paid employee's salary or paid wages.
Those are just a few injustices I'd like to see done away with.
There are a couple other things I'd like to see too:
Tax objection - being able to forbid the I.R.S. from using your tax contribution for objectional pursuits (i.e. nuclear / WMDs research, election campain contribution, corporate subsidies, any religion oriented disbursment, scientific research groups that CANT prove they do not harm animals or the environment, block all pork barrel usage, etc...)
Anyone who has "return on investment" as the sole means of income (i.e. inheritance winners, landlords, stock holders, board of directors, etc...) have to do some kind of "REAL" work that benifits society in some way.

You are all crazy! This is the best idea I have seen in a long time. This is the first good idea Movie studios have had. I was at Blockbuster the other day and renting a DVD costed me $4.85. The Flexplay DVD cost $6, thats not much more. And think of what I got. I am an avid rental guy so believe me I know what I'm talking about. Rental places make all their money off me in late fees. I return everything late. True I am an exception but even the most punctual of people return movies late. With these DVD's I don't have to worry about it. I buy it once and for the additional dollar and a half I get to make my own time table. No late fees.
On top of that the 48hr thing is perfect. For one one thing video rental places give you 3 to 7 days to rent, depeneding on whether its a new release or not. Lets get real here. We don't need 7 days to watch a movie, we only need one. The 3 or 7 day convience is so we can watch the movie when we want. If we rent two movies, not many people watch them in a row! No we watch one, then several days later watch the other one. Better yet we don't get to watch the other one at all. I don't know how many movies had to return that I didn't watch, or better yet how many movies I forced my self to watch at the last minute only to run back to the video store to return it. In addition, all the video stores have noon check in times which makes this impossible. Late fees are almost assured. With this disck the clock doesn't start ticking untill you open the DVD. Hence I can buy three of these, watch one, throw it away and have the rest for months before I watch them. By all accounts as far as I see it, the time of check out is a year, since that is how long the disk last. Yeah you can say, but once you watch it you only have 2 days to watch it. I ask--- how many times are you going to watch it. If you like it that much you are going to buy it; and please don't give me that- "I love the movie and i want my friend to watch it." That never works. I have tried that dozens of times and I have always had to say to my friends, "Sorry I had to reurn it a few days ago. Let just rent it again!" So as far as I am concerned, logically speaking, you can have this DVD rented out for a year, since once you watch it the time is inconsequental; whoever is in teh house can easily watch it in the two day time period.
In addition to this is the fact that these DVD's can be available anywhere, not just a movie store. I can get a movie I want when I am at the grocery store or Gas Station. I don't have to go to a specific location and I don't have to make 2 trips to that location. I get it all done in one spot and I don't have to worry about running back to the store, wasting my 2 dollar gas, and putting the dam video in the drop box.
Honestly I don't know what yall are talkin about. Everyone I have told about this, since I found out, thinks it would be a great idea as long as more movies were on the ticket- which if this turns out to be successfull-will be. Do I wish it were the same price as a rental-($-Ohh i'm saving $1.20-what a savings-lol) yes. But do I think all the benifits are worth the $1.20-- YES!!!!!!!. I only have to make one trip- and by all indications I can kill two birds with one stone since the videos will be in reguar markets where I will be doing other shopping- i don't have to make an additional trip to return the darn thing. I have an unlimited check out time- i can buy it and have it for a month before I watch it- then the 48hrs kicks off which is plenty of time for me and the fam to watch. Then I can save the disk to recycle. Their even offering a free rental with the check in of 6 blank disks, which they send u a pre-paid envelope for. They also stated on their website that futre versions of the disk will come with stamped envelopes. And please don't give me that enviromental boo hoo. By all accounts people will recycle if they are informed and if they are compensated, which Disney is willing to do. Even so, throwing away a plastic disk is no different then the plastic bags we throw our trash out in. It's all rediculous when you think about it. Please don't let me go off on this issue but just to the math in your head and think about it logically and you will find that throwing away plastic disks is no more going to hurt the enviroment then any of the other crap were throwing away.
Also, my Grandma loves them. Before I could never dream of renting her movies since she lives far away and I only see her every few weeks. If I did rent movies for her then I would have to drive an hour back over there to return then when she was done- and who knows how long that would be. She can't drive nor is she willing to go through all that trouble at the video store. Now I buy 5 or so of these DVD's for her and she loves them. She cried when I brought them over and was completely dumbfounded when I told her she didn't have to return them. I still don't think she fully understands the technology- she just knows she doesn't have to goto the video store and she doesn't have to worry about incurring late charges.
Also I have Netflix and it is wonderful and i love it but its not the same. When you want to rent a movie, you want it now! Movie rentals are almost always done on impulel. Your will some people and you all decide, hey lets rent a movie. Netflix, as wonderful as it is does not allow you to do this. You have to wait days before you get your movies. This does not work. It works for your own personal planned use, but impulse is out of the question.
SO I'M FOR IT! I love em and I hope their around to stay. Their a great convience, worth the extra buck. I am tired of late fees, tired of long lines at the video store, tired of things beging rented out, tired of driving all the way to teh video store to return a movie that they end up charging me a late fee for anyways. (And no I am not lazy) This Idea makes sense and in the end, all you end up doing is saving money. yes the movie studio makes more money, but their right in this capitolist county to do so. The video rental industry is a billion dollar industry. Why not get a cut in that. People will always rent movies. Unless movies buying prices come close to rental prices, it will always be that way; and that my dear friends is never going to happen. So I say embrace the technology by seeing all the positives and not the NEGATIVES!!

I still think the best solution to date is directv pay per view. You buy any new movie you want to watch that they are showing for 3.99, you get to watch it for a whole day as that is their time limit, and you Can record it when you order it. If you end up thinking the movie sucks, Just record over it with the next one that doesnt suck. And, NO late fees.
