Why Do People Hate Windows?
Posted by Brad Pineau on December 6th, 2003 at 11:10 pm AST     [5042 views]

If two people are talking about Windows, chances are that they are making fun of it, or talking about how much it sucks and how much they hate Bill Gates and Microsoft. These days, it seems people hate Microsoft more than they hate spinach. It just blows my mind that so many people are on the anti-Microsoft band wagon... and I would like to know why.

I was at a technology conference last year, called the CUTC. Almost all of the people there were all talking about how awesome Linux is, and how Windows sucks. I asked a few people why they hated Windows... and they all answered "It just sucks. Linux is the way of the future." And then I would ask if they ran Linux at home or at work, and they would say "No, I'm still using Windows." This is a very common trend - people seem to hate Windows, yet they use it all the time... and that makes me angry. If you don't like Windows, then you shouldn't use it. There are free alternatives out there, so you should stop complaining and start using something else.

Myself, I'm a Windows user, and I love it. Sure, there are security holes and constant updates, but I truely believe that Windows XP is the best operating system. I've used about every operating system out there... MS-DOS, all the Windows versions, OS/2 Warp and Merlin, and various flavors of Unix and Linux. For personal computing, Windows is by far the best one of the bunch. I'll totally agree that for servers, Linux would be the first choice, but for the home PC, it's all about Windows. Now, I will agree that Mac computers can make good home computers as well, but I think they are a bit too pricey to compare to PCs.

And for those of you who think that Bill Gates is the devil... think about this... Where would we be without Microsoft? When Bill Gates first released Windows, he revolutionized home computing. Windows made it so the average Joe could use a computer without having to know DOS commands. I'll agree that along the way, there have been many bugs in the Windows operatring systems (we are all familiar with the blue "screen of death"), but an operating system is one of the most complex peices of technology humans have ever created... and all you programmers out there know that software can never ever be 100% bug free. Sure, Linux is a more secure operating system, but it has lots and lots of bugs too, and it's not very user friendly. You just don't hear about Linux bugs as much because no one would ever bash open source software...

My main point is this... Windows is a fantastic operating system. If you disagree, that's fine, but I hope you have good reasons. I just hate it when people trash Windows without even really knowing why. It seems that everyone is just jumping on the anti-Windows band wagon because it's the cool thing to do, they think open source software is the why of the future.

i have only been using computers for about 3 years and I started off using windows 98.Being completely computer illiterate i broke that poos OS many times but that was my fault not windows. Then i installed Win ME and i have to say that is one of the worst ones operating systems i have ever used so i went back to 98.From there i went to windows 2000 Professional and it was very stable using the NTFS file system instead of Fat 32 but i guess you knew that already:).Anyway I then decided to give linux a go and dual booted a version of Redhat and Good ol windows XP.Like you said Linux is not very user friendly and I havent had any problems with XP except for the odd bug here and there. Its kind of hard to say where we would be without Bill Gates and his Windows OS's but i started as a Windows user and i will continue to be one until something better comes along.

Oh wow, this is an interesting topic...

I personally don't care for Windows (TM). I grew up on UNIX based computers and using telnet sessions and XTerminals to do my work.

I didn't need what Microsoft offered. And frankly, back when Windows 3.1 first came out, I thought it sucked. There were alot more better GUIs out there at that time -- MacOS, X-Windows with whatever flavor Window Manager you wanted.

To me being able to login to my machine from anywhere and see what I would see if I were right in front of it, that is true freedom.

Posted by Brad Pineau on December 7th, 2003 at 1:17 am AST [email] [website]

I agree with you Glenn, that being able to log in from anywhere, and have the same visuals, is true freedom. Windows XP does offers this with its Remote Connection tool. It's totally awesome, I use it all the time.

What flavors of Linux did you run? What did you find about them that turned you off?

Posted by Jeni on December 7th, 2003 at 1:35 pm AST [email] [website]

what a great topic, and I have to agree with the 'jumping on the bandwagon' thing. seems like there are lots of people out there with little to no actual Linux experience that talk crap about Windows without actually knowing what they're talking about. I suppose I'd have to count myself in that category, tho... I run WinXP on my laptop, and I have to say it is the best Windows experience I've had (starting at Win95). I also ran MandrakLinux for a while several years ago and loved it, tho. it's not 'user-friendly', in the sense that it's not idiot proof...you can royally screw it up without realizing it (yes, I speak from personal experience lol). personally, I will be going back to a dual boot with WinXP and Mandrake 9.2 very soon, but my personal reason is cuz I love the challenge of it. I like to know what something is doing and why, and I love to play around with stuff like that. whether or not Linux becomes my OS of choice and I run it exclusively remains to be seen, mainly because of a lack of software (which may have been remedied since I last really looked into it).
my beef with Microsoft in general is that it's proprietary as hell; with Windows specifically - it's HUGE size wise, and it's a real resource hog. ME was the worst. I don't like an OS that comes already loaded with stuff I will never use, stuff that I didn't ask for. while that works well for a good portion of the population (having everything you might possibly need at first right there at your fingertips), I personally would like to have a choice as to whether or not to keep it or find something else without simply installing several versions of what is basically the same type of software.
great food for thought!

I use my computer for email, internet access, gaming, word processing, music downloading and storing digital photos. That's about it. If something were to go horribly wrong there's about a 10% chance I'd know how to fix it. So basically, I know how to use my computer but I don't know a lick about how it works.

That being said, I've had the thing for about 16 months and it came with Windows XP on it. I have yet to see the blue screen of death on my machine or have any other problems I could blame on the OS, and I think most casual users like me would probably say the same thing.

Kudos to Brad!

I too agree that Microsoft gets bashed unfairly. My computer running Windows XP has crashed maybe once since I got it, and I don't even restart very often, though I do put my notebook in hibernate mode... which to me seems like a greater feat - dumping all of memory to disk and then re-loading it without ever missing a beat.

Even so, UNIX and Linux are way better in terms of reliability, and plus they were designed to be multi-user operating systems in the first place, so security is much more straightforward. Where they are lacking is in the X-Window GUIs.

No matter how much you like typing in commands and writing scripts, the GUI is where we spend most of our time. KDE and Gnome are getting pretty nice, but they still don't even compare to the feel of the Windows interface. For example, I find that mouse pointer movement, one of the most fundamental things we do, is still choppier on X-Window systems than on Windows. I'm also doubtful that there are any browsers available for Linux that are nearly as great as Internet Explorer.

There are several conveniences from Windows I wouldn't be willing to give up - a keyboard key (Windows key) that opens the Start menu, for example, a shortcut to open an Explorer window (Windows + E), being able to type URLs into the run box to open a browser and opening that run box with a shortcut key (Windows + R), favourites on the Start menu, dragging and dropping items onto the Start menu, a button to quickly hide all windows and show the desktop, not to mention the Quick Launch bar itself.

I know some GUIs have some of these features... maybe even all of them. I would like to support free software and install Linux someday, though I don't dare to on this computer because it's set up the way I want and I don't have install disks. Hopefully next time I get a new computer, I'll be able to afford to keep this one and put Linux on one of them.

But until then, there's simply nothing wrong with Windows for my purposes, so why switch?

Have you ever tried any version of MacOS? Seems that you have used every other OS out there.

Posted by Brad Pineau on December 7th, 2003 at 5:29 pm AST [email] [website]

Yes, I've used MacOS 8 before, and I thought it was ok. I've seen MacOS X in action, and I really liked the GUI. As mentioned in the article, I'm sure Mac computers would make fine home computers. They are stable and user friendly. Only I find they are more expensive, and the OS seems a little wierd, coming from a Windows background.

Things that bothered me most about MacOS:
- To eject a CD, you drag the icon to the trash can. This just seems backward.
- The one mouse button. (I realize that some think this is better, but I don't like having to hold that control key in to get the "right click menu")
- The top menu switches as the focued program switches (windows don't have their own menu bar)

Posted by Mandy on December 7th, 2003 at 7:12 pm AST

- all new Mac keyboards have "CD eject" keys right on them.. so you don't have to drag the icon to the trash (not that requires a lot of challenge and skill IMO)

- you can buy and use any old 2 button usb mouse on your Mac with usb support.

- and each application having it's own menu bar is weird a first, but also a very good thing. It makes it easy to control applications

People who "don't" like Mac OS usually can't find any real complaints about it other then silly little superficial things like the number of buttons on the mouse.. that just shows how far Macs have come eh :-)

Posted by Mandy on December 7th, 2003 at 7:15 pm AST [website]

oh and don't have to hold the control key for right click either :-) even on a one button mouse..

Posted by Andrea Vail on December 7th, 2003 at 7:26 pm AST [email] [website]

Macs do make fantastic home computers as well as systems in a large network. Being the system admin of 80ish Macs, I know this best.

Sure, Windows has been in the large enterprise/network arena longer than Mac (which originally excelled in peer to peer networking, something that from what I can tell Windows still hasn't caught up on).

OS X is great for networking, and for controlling in a network environment. Mac OS X server keeps getting better and better, especially with Panther Server.

I gotta agree with Mandy; every complaint I hear about the MacOS is "one button mouse", "how come closing a window doesn't quit an app" and silly lil things like that. Once you start to use MacOS, the logic of it all is rather refreshing. I find I get lost in the cumbersome Windows OS when I have to use it (which is on a daily basis).

Posted by Mike on December 19th, 2003 at 5:21 am AST

I use Linux all the time and I hate Windows. Wait. I don't really hate Windows. WindowsXP is a great operating system as far as I'm concerned. However, Linux has better network support, so I use it instead. Also, I've gotten so used the the linux shell console, that it hurts to use the WindowsXP console. I have found that Linux as a desktop OS runs a little slower than WindowsXP, but feature wise, I can do everything I could do before as well or better than I could do before. The one thing I have had to give up is games. WindowsXP is still by far the best platform for computer gaming, and probably will be for a while.

In regards to Mac's, I have used OS X a fair bit, and I must say I really like it. It takes a little getting used to, but once it starts to click, it clicks quickly. (and this is coming from > 5 years on Windows and < 3 months on OS X). Also, I think part of the reason Mac's cost so much more is you pay to have something that works quickly and works easily the first time. If time equals money, and you can work faster on a Mac, you can save money.

Posted by Andy on December 19th, 2003 at 12:59 pm AST

I have to admit that the latest versions of windows are really getting quite good as far as stability - in particular XP and to a certain extent 2000. I use Linux mainly because I'm not prepared to fork out for a copy of Windows when Linux is fine for what I do.

The thing that bugs me about windows is its flaunt of standards. Microsoft seem to think that because it is so widely used it can implement and change what parts of standards it sees fit. For example, IE on windows does still not fully support png images yet, depsite them being far superior to gifs and a standard since 1996. Outlook express is also notorious for its interoperability with other email systems.

As for a browser to rival Explorer, I think Mozilla Firebird is actually better. It is very responsive, it supports tabbed browsing where you can have multiple pages loaded in one window, and has very good blocking of popups as standard. I get really irritated when forced to use IE.

I started playing around with computers around 1999, and I was a full windows fanatic. But then I discovered linux, and the X-serve system, and the linux feel, I like the linux interface much better then windows, but then again I am still pretty novice at linux so I have to use windows to do all my work and stuff, but I have to say that windows is not that bad they should just merge with unix and do something interesting.

Posted by Martin Owens on January 26th, 2004 at 8:25 am AST [email]

I belive Microsoft to have outgrown the market for which is protects like a fearfull dictatorship. I find it laughable that the only rivals to the windows brand is somthing that can not be squashed by money alone or corperate methods. Windows as an OS is great, Windows as an ideolegy is very flakey, and I'd prefare to be off the wagon before it the poo hits the fan.

Posted by Giuliano on April 5th, 2004 at 4:19 pm AST [email]

I've been a Windows user for quite a while but I really prefer Linux to it. It took me some time to realize what was wrong with Windows. Though I admit that Windows XP is the best Windows incarnation so far, the issues here go far beyond stability concerns. Windows is poorly conceived.
In Linux you are discouraged from running as root, for example, and user data is clearly separated from system data. That way you get an easily manageable system, which keeps reliable over time. There are no such things as having to format you harddisk from time to time to keep you machine usable and it's really difficult to screw up your machine. In Windows everything tends to get all intermangled - just take for instance some petty software you've downloaded on the net that installs a shared library in windowssystem when you set it up.
You see, security issues in Windows go beyond a few breaches - you are effectively exposed to several threats. Take a moment to think why there aren't any Linux viruses (well, actually there are some, but they're all pretty innocuous) - it certainly has nothing to do with Windows popularity, it has to do with it's conception.
The only "problem" I see with Linux is that all these concepts that make it such a wonderful piece of software require some getting used to and a lot of patience and reading - something that, by itself, drives much of it's potencial users away.

Ok I hope the person that wrote this reads this and replies. Ok I use to use windows and all that fun stuff, but once I started playing with unix and linux. I found that unix is a far more flexable and more reliable way to run a computer. Blue screen of death I bet you know that term well and wheres it come from WINDOWS. You say yea older version but Windows XP is the best yea blah blah blah. The point is windows had that problem unix didnt. Around 300 viruses come out a day for windows and theres less that a hundred viruses for unix/linux. Window is for gamers and net surfers. Also Bill Gates the devil LMAO, no he is a genius yes but he is a money hungry, monarch of the windows world. No open source, $100 dollars for one cd. Not only that when you do reformats in xp trying to load your key code only works so many times so screw reformmating. One last thing if your rolemodel Bill Gates has Billions of dollars why doesn't he use that money TO FIX ALL THE PROBLEMS WITH WINDOWS AND TAKE THE TIME TO ALLOW ALL THE BUGS TO BE FIXED BEFORE THROUGHING IT OUT THE CONSUMER.

ps I only use Linux.

Posted by DoNAR on May 11th, 2004 at 4:09 am AST [email] [website]

Well the people how say they hate windows, they actually do. I would say that world should be thankful to Bill Gates who promoted computers by offering his OS. Where was Linux in mid eighties? and, who was using Unices at PCs in those days? Have we forgotton Novell Netware Servers & Win 3.1 clients?

Anyway, I am a hard core Unix guy. My work involves working on Cabinet sized Sun E10K or 15K machines so genuinely I would support Linux or Unix based OS. But point here is not what is good & what is bad. Point here what is marketted and what is not? Bill Gates or MS has a huge marketing department that advertises and makerts the product by showing it to IT illiterate Bussiness Executive. No one does that for Linux. MS is a product by marketing, Linux is product by word of mouth. MS OS are supported, RedHat & TurboLinux has started supporting their OS nearly a year ago (most of Linux or its application are not supported, just HOW-Tos are available). When u buy a PC u get pre-installed Windows, why not Linux? or not even a choice if u wanna choose to install Linux by saving $350 or $400?

I bought laptop in December & asked HP not to install Windows or dont give me CDs but reduce the price for the Softwares as I dont want to install the windows, they refused. Why did they refuse? Why did I have to pay for XP Professional if I didn't want it? I was forced to buy it.

My point is its not that Linux is bad, I am saying users are forced to use Windows. If people will start buying computers with pre-installed Fedora, they will automatically learn how to use it.

BTW, XP is much stable than NT4 or Win98SE but it still crashes, not so often though. Windows servers sux, and I always install Samba with PDC & BDC for Windows based client. I know its pain in the neck, but trust me once configured, up & running its rock solid as compared to any MS based network.

Anyway, I still use Windows from time to time. It looks OK for 8 hours desktop job in office for business excutives or office secrataries (though they will use Linux if they are given to use and taught a bit) ... Windows is not good for a hardcore Solaris Systems Administrator as a work station.

Bill Gates stole the gui for windows after he went and saw apples presentation for their os gui so he didnt really create a user friendly gui. also, all windows is doing now is looking better but keeping the same stability. The new longhorn os is based on xml. Who really cares if you can create tiles on your desktop its just unnecessary. I dont feel like upgrading because of looks. I want something thats gonna be stable, do everything i need, and has security. The only thing that windows has is the second one because its easier to distribut programs on windows but you can still get similar ones for linux.

Posted by Chris on June 11th, 2004 at 9:37 am AST [email]

hey, i just wanted to say that i totally agree with you. At my school they have macintosh computers and, i dunno why, but i dont like them. Most peaoples arguments against windows is that it is not really virus resitant. I tell you what. Buy a good antivirus program. but not Norton. buy mcAfee. Since mc afee was installed on my comp, i have never had trouble, even though i have windows 2000pro. and windows XP home. It all works perfectly fine. The first comp. i had was an IBM aptiva. with win98. i must say it wasnt as good but i thought it was pretty ok, even tough at the end i couldnt even open saved files. Everyone who buys macs is always like "oh my god its so much better and faster bla bla bla, it cant crash bla bla bla. It crashes, but not like microsoft. first it slowes down and then it freezes.Sometimes you wait for ages only to discover theres nothing you can do. in my opinion bill gates was a genious. He invented the first userfriendly system for PCs and he was on of the reasons that so many peple have a computer now.

Posted by The Almighty Me on June 21st, 2004 at 6:19 pm AST

I use a Mac. I've used almost everything (Ok, not EVERYTHING) as far as Windows: 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP. Pretty much everything before XP was terrible in my opinion. Too many crashes for unknown reasons, sometimes the keyboard wouldn't type, the mouse would freeze, blue screen of death, etc. I know you're gonna say I'm complaining about old OS's (I am :P), but I will say this: XP is a HUGE improvement over the OS's of Window's past. Personally, I don't fancy XP. That's all. It's kind of like why people like certain foods: We all have different taste(bud)s. Sometimes, people will just like something better. I just find Macs more useful. I've noticed that the only programs that have had frequent errors on my Mac were Internet Explorer and MS Office, both Microsoft Products. Then again, I did have a problem with Limewire, a Kazaa-like program, but that's to be expected, P2P Programs have messed our PCs up countless times. My parents have had to take in their computer twice because of fatal problems. That may or may not be because of Windows, we were never really sure.
The only Windows OS's that I really, truly, hate now are the ones before XP. XP is fine. I'd use it if I had to. It has improved slightly over viruses and such, but I still love my Mac. Viruses are less prone to hit a Mac system as well. Some people say that's because of the popularity of Windows and its large legion of followers. Yes, that is a big factor - HOWEVER - And this is just from what I've heard - It is harder to write viruses for UNIX-Based Systems.
I know many people who don't use Macs for petty reasons like the one-button mouse deal. But honestly, let's face the facts. No one - I repeat - NO ONE I know still uses the mouse they got when they purchased their computers. You can use any USB compatible mouse w/ Macs, yet people still complain.
And to be fair, I'll list what I like about Windows and Macs, because I'm such a nice little kiddy.

Windows:
Games, lots of 'em
Almost every program available
Easy to share files, as it is used by over 90% of the population
Being able to delete things by right-clicking

Macs:
Gotta show the love for Stickies.
Comes bundled w/ music and movie editing software
Safari
iChat
Airport Express
Etc.

Overall, both are decent OS's. But for now, I'm gonna stick with my Mac.

Sincerely,
The Almighty Me

After starting to compute on vic20s and a variety of other machines and operating systems, I use and prefer MacOS. Well I do miss my C64, I get all misty eyed just thinking about it :D
I must say I don't like windows for a variety of reasons. One of my biggest reasons for hating windows is a huge "I don't understand why its even there file" registry. That things stores so much info that is so encrypted and difficult to manage, I have had to clean a registry a few times, then had to reinstall windows afterward. I haven't seen anything like the registry on other operating systems. I find that registry rather unnerving too say the least.
I find MacOS much more intuitve and simplistic I am able to be more productive with it. I also find MacOS easier to fix when something goes wrong, software which causes conflicts is rather effortless to uninstal if need be or customize.
However I must say Windows XP is a vast improvement over older versions of windows especaily 2000, ME even 95. I find XP has many beifical feature not seen in previous versions. However I still prefer my Mac.

I wish people would test drive other systems before deciding to blindly bash one over the other. Some people think Windows is great others prefer Mac, lynux, unix, some even cry because they miss thier C64! For myself I love Mac and would recommend it to just about anyone.

well i hate windows...but i im using it....lame....why?... cause theres nothing else to game on.

Bill gates has robed the worlds gaming community by sueing any company the even make a os thats just slightly like windows...the gui he stole! he even tryed sueing macintosh!

Bills a loser...he program team maybe great but hes a nub...anyone should be able to make a good os if yor make 150 billion dollars a year! comon! windows is virus prone because bill gates has screwed over to many small and large companys and programmers..and because he refuses to let anyone even slightly make a gui the would help others profit in the use of a new os...we all are not interested in learning linux commands i order to listen to a cd! we should be able to use os's like lindows and not have to relearn a new gui all together...grandma's and the regular joes dont want to take time to do that...so the company flops and no better os's can be made...not to mention the money bill gates pay the gaming companys to keep there titles very windows friendly....the moment your new ea sports game crashes it sends a report, and guess wht ea and windows has a great fix for you...not that this isnt nice... it would only be fair to us all to be able to try new os's without bill-the-billionare robbing the community of a better os, if not a better os company.....who knows what really good os's we could be running if not for his crap!

mike

Posted by mike on November 8th, 2004 at 10:19 am AST

read into it.....bill brings laws suits a million against any company that starts to cramp his style
"macs gui" and because the whole world has been put under the curse of windows os's he claims the impunitive damages caused by the "windows like gui's of other companys" is outrageos! think if he makes 150 bollion a year anf the make a 149 the next which is more than likely is due to an aging os..he claims it was due to the "windows like os"! so in turn these small company have to pay outrageous amonts of money in return! and if not that bill just drags the whole thing out so long no body can affort the legal costs!

bills a loser...get on google and read about it!

To the person who said that no one could find a good reason that they don't like mac here is one.
Why do i have to order all of their crap out of a magazine. I can't go down to my local store and find any software for it. If I want to upgrade I have to pay out the yin-yang. Don't get me wrong Mac is user friendly. You just can't find s**t to use on them.

I love GNU/Linux. I hate MS, Apple, and every other Closed Source OS.

I also love typing:
"apt-get update" then "apt-get upgrade"

to upgrade EVERY PROGRAM on my whole system! (Yes, EVERY SINGLE PROGRAM. Not just the operating system.)

I've been using Windows when I was young until now. I'am currently using Windows XP Proffesional. It is VERY good. Without Windows, Linux wouldn't even be created since Linux just add some more features to the Windows feature to make them better then Windows. Even though people say Linux is stabler then Windows, this is not true. If it was stabler then everyone would be using Linux the day it came out but did it happen? Of course not, many perople are still using Windows for a fact.

I used to like Microsoft, but not any more. I am tired of the goofy GUIs, Wizards, and the whole concept of Microsoft MYism "My" this and that folders that one cannot delete. Mostly all Windows programs want to monitor and run as a Network TSR or Service to "Call Home".
Windows, pretty much makes me feel like a victim these days. I am tired of digging into the OS to disable of all the memory hogging cute features. Goofy animated Service related popups. Microsoft knows that us Geeks hated these features since day one. However they use these cute features as a guise so the majority wants it and us geeks are left in the cold. Out of the box XP Pro has all of the same undesired BS as Home addition. Why??? I want my users to be able to work efficiently and not spend half the work day dealing with a useless GUI that resembles a trip to Disneyland. I do not want the Giant software companies to dictate how they think My Computer should operate, and what is for the best for us. Because of this, us Administrators are forced to run additional Servers and services, because MS has a way of "Hooking" us in. So much is wasted with this goofy GUI, just to make the OS efficient.
I have wasted my time with Microsoft Certifications.
Funny, Microsoft had me almost convinced that Shell crashes are part of the computing experience (If a flea lands on the Monitor and farts, this can cause a MS shell crash)
I am refocusing on Linux.
Novell SuSe is Sweet : )
I don't feel "bum rushed" by programmers turned salespeople.
Linux is the way to go

Windows sucks for one reason: the "Shut down..." button is above the "Start" button. I think every version I have every seen has this particular feature. I also believe that I have attempted to access the start bar some 50,000 times in my life and ended up with the shut down menu at least 50% of the time. I am tired of it, and it never gets fixed. Could they ever possibly move it to another area?

Other than that, it is pretty good. But, in engineering circles we say that one thousand atta-boys is equal to one aw-shit. So, too bad: it sucks!

And for the smart-ass to follow, choose your response:
1) I know you are, but what am I?
or 2) You're not the boss of me!

Windows raped my granddad and curb stomps niggers.

I use Windows XP Proffesional with Service Pack 2. I don't hate windows at all. I confess I have never used Linux (Although I would love to). Since I am a gamer, I have no other option but to use Windows. I have dual windows on my second computer (Windows XP and Windows 98), because of compatibility issues of some old and news games.
However, I have used all versions of Windows from, 95-XP. And I have to say among the lot, XP is the best. There is no doubt about it.
Speaking about people being forced to ue Windows, one of my friends bought an Acer laptop, and he chosed to have Linux installed because it was free, and there was no objection whatsoever. But I suppose some companies sell laptops with Windows only, which is wrong in a way, because the user has the right to chose the operating system.
I genuinely like Windows. I don't know if Microsoft were ethical as far as the alleged stealing of Apple's GUI is concerned, but here they are legally in the clear, and here they are giving us quality software. So I don't wish to hold that aganist Microsoft. Besides Windows has the maximum 3rd party support, so most people have no choice in that matter.
Nevertheless, I don't think its a bad thing that 3rd party developers favor Windows. Its a very good operating system, albeit it has its flaws. But I think evrey operating system has its share of flaws. So I think its more of matter of personal choice.

I have not seen many post that are truthful in here or atleast speak with too much O/S experience.I have used many Linux O/S's and all of the MS O/S's and found out a few things :
1. Unix is a superior O/S as far as stability and security plus the look and feel not to mention graphics and pictures are better than windows, but things are harder to patch and
programs are not as easy to install in most cases as windows.

Posted by Anonymous on September 12th, 2005 at 3:54 am AST

2. If you want pretty pictures, awesome GUI or work with alot of audio/video you need a MAC ! anything else work be stupid.

Posted by Anonymous on September 12th, 2005 at 3:54 am AST

3.My experience is the average person does not want to learn
much at all. They a point and click O/S with no brains involved (have you guys ever heard of Linspire ? Linux
with the point and click easy use of windows.) and that is
mostly what windows offers.

Posted by Anonymous on September 12th, 2005 at 3:55 am AST

4. Finally Let's clear up some things:
1. a fully patched NT 5.0 Box (Windows 2000 Pro) is far better than ANY XP version( more stabile and uses much less
resources, I know I have 6 computers and all running different O/S's)
2. Mozilla Firefox is FAR superior to IE execpt for ActiveX controls and that is because FireFox does not offer native support.
3.XP does crash and hang alot and it's network support sucks
compared to 2000 Pro after you install Service pack2 on XP
I think the choices of O/S are more a choice of lifestyles.
want easy, stupid, lazy or be job specific get windows
want to learn a computer from ground up and it's inner workings or a customize O/S that you are in control
want creativity,make music,make movies,pretty pictures and
a awesome GUI,not to mention ease of use get a MAC

I have a Mac, and I think its pretty cool, and I also have a PC, which is okay. One thing that annoys me about macs is that the alias' and other icons don't line up automatically, so you have to carefully place then properly yourself.

Windows is pretty good, although the security sucks. I think Macs are probably better than Windows.

For those who complain about the one button thing, just get a two button mouse ;)

I am one of those people who hates Windows yet am forced to use it. Why? It's not because I choose to use it, it's because in order to play games, I must run Windows.

Posted by Thi on March 20th, 2005 at 1:54 am AST

I've been using Windows when I was young until now. I'am currently using Windows XP Proffesional. It is VERY good. Without Windows, Linux wouldn't even be created since Linux just add some more features to the Windows feature to make them better then Windows. Even though people say Linux is stabler then Windows, this is not true. If it was stabler then everyone would be using Linux the day it came out but did it happen? Of course not, many perople are still using Windows for a fact

Linux is FAR "stabler" than Windows, and that IS a fact. Users aren't logged in with the root account (Administrator for Windows) so they can't effect any vital system files or settings. Because of this, any kind of virus will not hurt the system as it doesn't have access. As well, system files are separated from user files. I don't think you or any Windows user cares about this though. If Linux is superior to Windows, why aren't I using it? There's a couple reasons.

Microsoft kills any sort of competition by putting in their own "closed standards". What this means is that they take a standard that is avaliable cross-platform (can run on Windows, *nix, or any operating system that chooses to support it) and butchers it, making it incompatible with the original standard, makes it closed source (nobody can port it to their favourite operating system due to lack of source-code) and releases it only for Windows. A couple examples would be Java and HTML.

Another reason is gaming. Yes, you can run some Windows games on Linux or Mac if they port it over, and some gaming companies (ID software for one) port the games across. 90% of games will only run on Windows. There is an open-source program called WINE that simulates Windows APIs and whatnot to run Windows programs on Linux and a few games, but it is far from mature software. Transgaming has a program called Cedega, formally WineX, that took the WINE code and implimented alot of DirectX 9 support (DirectX running on OpenGL) to run quite a few Windows games. The problem is, most of the games are very glitchy, and even more don't run at all. This isn't the solution.

My point is, aside from gaming, Linux is the way to go. Gaming is all that is holding me back.
Thanks

Windows is like Wallmart.
Everyone likes to take advantage of the cheap prices but,......
Hold on Windows isn't cheap, its fucking expensive.
Why? If you don't know the answer to that question I'll have to
crush your cock rocks with a mallet.
It's called market share.

With that in mind, keep buying your cheap underwear from Walmart.
Continue supporting a giant that hands out checks that makes
welfare look like a promotion.
Once they have crushed their competition with their merchandise stained
with the blood of a million chinese orphans
that will be the end to your goddamn deals folks.

You'll have to pay what they want,
you'll have to buy what they want you to buy.
Wake up people.
Support democracy, support choice.
Support the little guy.
Fuck Windows.

At least sound like a titan that

Maybe a moniker such as

would be more appropiate.

hi.
first at all, i dont hate windows, however i'm a linux user, and im proud of it.
i think windows its pretty cool, like a nice toy... hmmm, its like when you learn to ride a bike, first you use one of those with little wheels on the back, but when you master it, it kind of lame still with those... its like a baby, a baby first use diapers then as he grows up, he starts to use boxers (it would be kind of stupid use diapers for a 10 yrs old boy and it would be worse for a grown up), of course there one valid reason to use windows:
when you need to use a program that is only for windows
in my case i use fedora core 4 linux and i have Vmware running windows xp to use some apps like macromedia flash 8 (i tried to use it using wine and crossover office but i can't... someday it'll work)

in another words: its nice to remmember the good old times when creating powerpoint file was like rocket science for you, but hey! grow up, keep your windows for the apps windows-only
thats it, bye!

Hi,
Without sounding rude Brad have have you ever used Mac OS X because if you had I am sure you would begin to hate windows as much as I do. For a start windows seems to attract spyware unlike Macs even a windows IT consultant has switched to a Mac. Secondly, unlike Windows Macs which are built on a rock solid UNIX base do not crash every 5 seconds. Last the Mac OS X tiger interface is so much user friendly than the windows interface. I do own a windows XP pc and that is the reason why I bought an imac.

I don't. I mean I don't think people hate Windows as because they are Linux user.
I am a linux user, I use Fedora 5 so far. I knew Windows and it's all good features.
I don't hate it, why should I?
If someone hate Windows, it is actually they love it. They tend to become depends on it.

OK for the games, it is ok to use Windows. It is designed for it.
Will you wearing coat while in the party dance floor? No.
So my opinion:
Use Windows for:
1. Games
2. Plug 'n Pray

Else for work, surely Linux, including truly Plug 'n Play.

For forcing people to use windows for buying new PC, I did force staff in my office to use Linux, and they love it, I mean I never doing troubleshooting PC problem since then. Yes I am a technician in my office.
