For the past week or so, I've been working on a project that required me to start using Visual Basic 6. Coming from a Delphi background, I've got to say that I absolutely hate Visual Basic! I've compiled a list of things I hate about it:- Measurements are in twips, not pixels. Twips are no good for developers!
- Help requires MSDN to be installed. There's no simple help files.
- No easy way to nudge controls by pixels.. err.. twips. (at least that I could find)
- The embedded text editor is just awful.
- Visual Basic doesn't detect type mismatches or undecclared variables until runtime, and you hit that line.
- Control events aren't listed with properies. You need to select the control, then the event from a dropdown in the text editor. (took me forever to find it)
- Controls dont have anchors.
- The Find dialog comes up Desktop center, so on two monitors, it's half on both screens.
- Environment just feels awkward.
- For text editor code completion - you need to double click on the selection with a mouse to select the method/property. (no way to do it with keystrokes without adding a space or a carraige return)
- Controls only have a limited amount of events.
And I'm sure there are others.. I just can't think of them right now. I just can't believe how much better Delphi or C++ Builder is better for Windows development. I mean, you would think that Microsoft would have a better tool for building Windows applications. I realize this list might anger some VB developers, who no doubt like the program. To them, I say "Try using Delphi"!
One thing to note... I did happen to like the fact that in the text editor, you can have a split window for the same file. Very useful for comparing different parts of the same file.

VB is backasswards in just about every sense. I have used it and will never do it again!
Delphi is the best and fastest development enviroment for windows. no question!
Also allows for large projects to be managed easily and cleanly. Quick and dirty programs are a snap.
Code is clean and compiler is the most intelligent of all of the compilers I have used ( in terms of how error messages relate to what you need to fix)
If you write programs for windows enviroment delphi is the answer!

put Option Explicit at the top of the code module to force variable declaration. Initially, after installing VB6 this directive doesn't appear when you create a new module, class, form, etc. You need to go to the Tools | Options dialog to set this.
Anyways, I'm not sure why you chose VB6 when .NET is now available. Considering your bias against VB6 you may want to code in C# for .NET

I agree with you... I wouldn't use VB6 under normal circumstances... but I took over a project that was coded in VB6, so I was forced to use it. If I had a choice, I would have used Delphi 7.

Sorry, VB Lover... but YOU'RE comments are baseless. I've used Visual Basic for over a month now... and it's the most cumbersome Windows Dev. tool out there. It sucks ass.

They'll never admit it, but Microsoft doesn't want you to be productive. When you're a monopoly, progress anywhere else is considered bad. A complex and convoluted development environment is actually good for Microsoft. It makes it that much harder for you to port your code anywhere else or create anything new that might threaten them. All microsoft wants is to make sure that every computer sold includes Microsoft software and as little of anyone else's software as possible.

Delphi is much more professional that VB.
I had a s/w manager once who would not let me use Delphi - here is the metric that he used to determine that C++ is a better development enviromnet. He counted the hits from Google after searching for the words Delphi and C++. Since C++ had more hits, it is obviously a better development environment. Everything went down hill from there.

Having used Java and a decent IDE (IntelliJ Idea recently) but now being in the unfortunate position of having to maintain legacy VB code I can unequivocally say that VB6 Sucks. Big Time.
I strongly doubt that anyone from Microsoft has any clue about how to write a usable IDE too. As for the half-baked VB6 - it is incapable of being useful for doing any serious development work.

Yeah and MSDN is HUGE. Its a shame it has to be that way, but given the size and nature of MSDN, its easy to see what a difficult job it would be to break it into smaller chunks and still keep it searchable and easily installable, etc. But i feel your pain. I'm curious how does Borland handle their documentation?

Use Ctrl + Up/Down/Left/Right arrow. While you are at it, if you use Shift, it changes the width and height. To multiselect controls, hold down Ctrl and click each control you want.

After using the VS.NET one, I too realised just how, um, plain the VB6 one is. The only tips I can give you to ease you pain are:
-turn off "Auto syntax check" under Tools->Options->Editor tab. This stops that annoying message box each time you make a syntax error because you are in the middle of typing code and you moved off the line.
-in the editor near the horizontal scroll bar to the left of the window, you can toggle between viewing all the code at once, or one sub/function at a time. You can optionally turn on "Procedure separator" under the Tools->Options->Editor tab, to have a drawn to indicate where one procedure ends and another begins.

I guess because its different. I used it for 6 years and after a while you get used to it. You might wanna get a few plug-ins to extend its operation. Also, make full use of the object browser and get familiar with the immediate window - they help *A LOT*.

Yeah, that always irked me. Only way round it is to do subclassing via the Win32 API..but save your code often because *YOU WILL* crash the IDE sooner or later when you start doing this. You might wanna turn on "Save changes" in Tools->Options->Environment tab.
If you can find a way by some miracle to move the project to VB.NET then give it all you've got, otherwise hang in there and good luck!

Thanks Eric, for your informative comments. Your reply helped fill in some gaps... but I'm glad to say that the VB project in question has long since ended. =) I'm back in Delphi now, and as happy as can be. But I will take your suggestion and try out VB.NET whenever I get a chance!

Twips is default in VB6 you can choose pixils but who cares anyways VB6, VB.net and Visual Studio are garbage. Delphi is also garbage.
C++ and Java are much better and once you use them you'll never use garbage again.

This is a perfect example of the kind of people that we live with. I call them the triple A generation (AAA) or anti-Microsoft, anti-technology and anti-advancement prejudice radicals. I get nauseous when I see people like this, which is everyday since I have like 3 AAA at work.
The other day I was reading Visual Basic.Net Class Design by Wrox and this AAA radical approach me and ask, What are you reading? knowing him I simply showed him the book cover, then he replied with the most predictable AAA radical comment, Oh!, slow, buggy and useless development.. I asked him, What makes Java better than .Net he replied, Speed, faster development and stability. Then I asked, Why? he couldnt give me one example. I told him I know Java, CGI and the tools he uses. But I also care to know asp, asp.net, vb.net, C# and a lot about the .net framework, and at least I know what one language does better than the other.
AAA radicals always complain about Microsoft bugs, but any average programmer knows that it is impossible to not have bugs or security issues on any major or largely used software. The reason why no one knows about open source system bugs is because there is no one to blame. Every company has bugs; any software that connects or feeds from or into another system can be hacked. The only difference is that Microsoft admits it and others dont. What defines a good developer? The ability to use existing technology the best way possible. So if Java is the best choice then use the best choice. If asp.net is, then use asp.net. Dont use a text file as a data source just because Microsoft made SQL Server. Would you trust a carpenter that fall in love with his hammer and want to use it on every job refusing the possibility that other tools might be more appropriate in certain circumstances? If you answer is yes then you are an AAA radical.

You are right mike, just remember that all tools have their purposes and your formula 1 can only be used at the race tracks, and a bike can be used everywhere including places where your formula 1 car cant. Its funny but, can you give me one example where a business application built in C++ have an advantage over the same application built using VB? Would the user notice the difference? You wouldnt know since you are just defending your favorite development environment, and it is the only thing you know. So, stick to that! Dont make comparison without facts. tunee is right, learn the concepts, variables, loops, inheritance, methods, events, etc. which you will be able to use on any programming language, don't become obsess with syntax (vb,c++,java), like some programmers that will continue to be programmers until their favorite computer language becomes obsolete.

Have only started using VB and will have to do so for the next year or so (unavoidable). i've only been using it for a couple of weeks now but I'm pretty sure of the fact I'll never use it after that.

I was originally taught visual basic back in secondary school and all the way through college. I thought it was brilliant! Couple of years ago, I moved on to visual studio .net and found that to be better than vb in every aspect and I loved it.
My friend who uses Delphi and C++ Builder told me to try them. I gave them a try and withing 2 months I was drawn to them. I can easily say that they are much better than visual studio .net.
visual studio .net has some excellent features that borland developer studio doesn't have but overall borland wins over microsoft.
Now, anyone who asks me, I refer them to borland developer studio.
Java is good but the performance is really poor!!! If you are going to Java programme then use JBuilder; it's simply marvelous!
Final Score is Borland WINS, Microsoft Lost!
