Top Ten Best Movies of All Time
Posted by Brad Pineau on December 20th, 2003 at 3:23 am AST     [20874 views]

Since Oscar season is upon us, I thought I'd compile a list of the ten greatest movies of all time. Of course, this list is just my own opinion, and keep in mind that I haven't really seen anything before 1980.

And the winners are...

10. American History X
9. Usual Suspects
8. Memento
7. Se7en
6. Gladiator
5. Pulp Fiction
4. American Beauty
3. Lord of the Rings (I'm counting the trilogy as one movie)
2. Matrix
1. Fight Club

I'll be posting my list of the all time greatest actors shortly. Sure enough, three of the actors who will appear in the list are in many of these movies (Ed Norton - 2, Brad Pitt - 2, Kevin Spacey - 3).

So what are some of your favourite movies?

Hmm, many of those movies are also favorites of mine, so let's see, best movies eh? Well the order is not really concrete, but let's see...

1. Fight Club
2. Memento
3. Shawshank Redemption
4. Godfather trilogy
5. Gladiator
6. Matrix (number 1 only and maybe 2)
7. Jurassic Park (number 1 only)
8. Sixth Sense
9. Minority Report
10. Happy Gilmore (had to put a comedy in there)

Really though, other than the top 4 or so, these are just the movies I can think about at the moment...
Other notables are: Star wars (any of the 5), Indiana Jones movies, Unbreakable, Terminator 2 and 3, Scarface, Silence of the lambs trilogy, and etc... (these again are the only ones I can think of)

Good list, Brad. I would have some older films in there if I was doing a top ten of all time... but for a top ten since 1990, we'd definitely have some crossover. Interesting the impact "Fight Club" has had on many... I thought it was a stylish, compelling film... and I own the great DVD package... but maybe because I'd read the book (and knew where it was going) the film didn't have the resonance with me it did with others.
Other films since 1990 that I'd have to think about for a list - Boogie Nights, Fargo, Shawshank Redepmtion, Silence of the Lambs, Schindler's List, Goodfellas, Being John Malkovich, L.A. Confidential, Traffic, Magnolia, Run Lola Run, The Sixth Sense, Minority Report, Rushmore, Shakespeare in Love, Babe, Requiem for a Dream, the Toy Storys, Finding Nemo, Almost Famous, Swingers, Trainspotting... man, this is hard.

Decent movies.........but here is the THE best movies of all time!

1. Spider-man 1 is in my opinion "The Best Movie out to date" and I know Spider-man 2 is going to be better some im going to include it. I know most would think that this is "just another super hero movie", but it is far from "just another movie". It is great on every level. 1 it has a good story, 2 great action, 3 a good coming of age story, and romance.

2. The Matrix Trilligy is pretty good, but the first one was the best.

3. X-men 1 and X2: X-men United are another set of great comic book adaptions.

4. Gladiator is a great movie, a good story, and great action.

5. Star Wars Trilligy. Again great story telling and good action at the same time.

6. Terminator Trilligy, but hands down T2 is the best out of all of them.

7. Lord of the Rings Trilligy is another good trilligy. Peter Jackson did an excelent job with them.

8. Jurassic Park Trilligy. All of these were pretty good. Again the first was the best out of all of them.

9. The Time Machine (2002) with Guy Peirce. This is a great remake of the previous movie.

10. Hulk (2003). This movie was really underated by people that are too lazy to sit through a story. Hulk had one of the better stories than most are willing to admit. I also like the way Ang Lee Directed this movie. He made it really feel like a comic book.

Well....This in my opinion is the Top 10 movies of all time. There are some other ones that deserve to be up there, but they just wouldnt fit =P. If you woulf like to chat about my opinion or yours my screen name for AOL Instant Messenger is Desired Hero. Thanks for the space to type.

LOL. Sorry, D, like I said - I havent seen many older movies. I'm sure if I saw the Godfather, it would be on my list.

You need to relax, D. Obviously every person has a different set of favourite movies. I posted mine, and I said upfront that these movies are my own opinion. Instead of bitching at me, why don't you post your own top ten list?

Posted by s8u8k on January 9th, 2004 at 1:50 am AST

D-
settle down, it is just an opinion not the real thing.
Although I have to agree, I think a little too much Brad in there. I cant believe some see Spiderman & Matrix as better films than LOTR!!
I could never compile a list from 1-10, but here are some which are definately up the top for me (of all different genre's):

-Almost Famous (the script & McDormand as the mother .. brilliant)

-The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy (for any normal person.. duh!)

-One True Thing (Meryl, Renee & W.Hurt made the best tearjerking movie almost ever)

-About Schmidt (Nicholson at his finest)

-X-Men 2 (possibly one of the funnest action movies ever)

-Godfather Trilogy (what can i say?)

-Groundhog Day (Bill Murray and the idea was hilarious and original)

-25th Hour (compelling drama.. what a cast!)

-Lost In Translation (what chemistry!)

-Anything Cate Blanchett is in!

-Gladiator (epic epic epic)

-A Beautiful Mind (Russ, Jen, Ed & Paul were unbelievable)

-Gaslight (that goes way back)

-Fargo (Frances McDormand was in it! Duh!)

Dances with Wolves w/Kevin Costner
8)Back to the Future (The first one)

I stumbled across this page, looking for the top 10 of anything to do with films. Who's the greatest actor of all time? Has to be Daniel Day-Lewis. Anyway here is my top 10 films of all time in no order of preference:

* Gangs Of New York.
* Raging Bull
* Happiness
* Taxi Driver
* Miller's Crossing
* Apocalypse Now
* Kill Bill
* The Killer
* Seven Samurai
* Heathers

The only decent list other than the one above is Julia's - 25th Feb.
Scrolling down this list I keep seeing a bunch of retarded films e.g The Saint, The Postman, 25th Hour etc. Why?

Well, since everyone else already has something posted, mine will just be another to the list.

1) Dead Poets Society (This movie is for anyone! It has all of the main components of a great movie: a plot, profound characters, comedy, romance, action, who couldn't love it?)

2) Schindler's List (Definitely an amazing movie! We love you, Liam!)

3) Gone with the Wind (Vivienne Leigh is perfect for the role of Scarlett. Again, this has every main component needed for a great movie: romance, action, limited comedy though...)

4) Romeo and Juliet (the 1968 film with Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting, not the Leo DiCaprio version, which I must say was the WORST reproduction of Shakespeare I've ever seen in my life)

5) Gladiator (Who can't like this movie? It's great.)

6) Any Charlie Chaplin Movie! (Yeah Charlie!)

I find it really interesting to see so many of the same movies on the top 10 lists. I agree with most of them, and its funny because a lot of them are not big blockbusters or talked about by the media, etc. It's hard to narrow my list down, so ill just give you some of the movies i enjoy...

**fight club**, 25th hour, american history x -- edward norton may not be the best actor EVER, but i certainly trust his taste in movies. All of these are amazing films

Brad pitt seems to have good taste as well.... **fight club** (as you can tell this is my all time favorie), snatch, ocean's 11, seven, and i quite like troy...

I have to give Johnny Depp a category as well... Blow (one of the best movies ever), pirates of the carribean, edward scissor hands, Chocolat, Sleepy Hollow

there are also the classics that everyone has named and are must sees (although i have to admit i found it way to hard to sit through the godfather so don't yell at me if that one's not here) -- casablanca, schindler's list, sophie's choice, gone with the wind, the sound of music, the wizard of oz, star wars, pretty woman, fried green tomatoes

The comics -- the royal tenenbaums (1/2 comic), school of rock, half baked, dumb and dumber, faris bueler... im not a big fan of most of this category because most are scary movie type

Recent dramas that will outlast the current competition -- chasing amy, gladiator, titanic, In America, 21 grams, Requiem for a dream (freakiest movie on the list, but none the less good...)

and the rest without a category....
SLC punk
Shrek
Lord of the Rings (not deserving of a TOP TEN, but definetly top 25, especially if u've read the book first, the movie ruins my outlook a bit)
pulp fiction
momento
Amistad
Faris Bueler's day off (i have no idea how to spell that one)
Bridget Jones' Diary
Love Actually (I like colin firth)
Erin Brocavich
Scar Face
Saving Private Ryan
Kill Bill
The Matrix (only the first)
Matchstick men
Sixth Sense
Lost in Translation
Amelie
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Crouching Tiger, hidden dragon
Big Fish

OK, THAT IS BY FAR ENOUGH AND I AM COMPLETELY SURE THAT NONE OF YOU WILL EVER READ ALL OF THIS ANYWAYS... actually, it makes me feel like somewhat of a loser, having seen all these movies recently... sigh, its getting late i should go to bed, but i like talking about movies, so if u want to talk about one let me know!

-hope thats ok :)
-top 11 (bet thats a first:)-

**NOTE** havnt seen lots of moives but quite afew :)

**IN ORDER**

1)*'Are You talking to me?' mirror scene -Taxi Driver*

one of the best scenes in cinema history. it has you
at edge and on nerve because of the mental state of
of the Character(Traivs Bickle---Robert De Niro--)stays
in your mind for a long while.

2)*The mcdonalds / burger convesation - Pulp Fiction* (nearly all scenes from P.Fiction)

three Words--Just Plain Cool--

3)* Walken and hopper scene from True Romance*

Character.One of the best interagation scenes ever.

4)*interagation of Tony Montana, first time you see the charcter- ScarFace*

how good is this?? VERY is the answer. its both serious and funny at same time. Al pacino great in the whole film but that scene sticks out

why is it a sad list? Reasons plz!! lol na just kidding

Posted by John on June 27th, 2004 at 2:39 am AST [email]

The top ten movies of all time is obviously opinion based, and in my opinion the matrix cannot be rated in number ten. The first was alright then the next two were just sad.
These are not in order but here are ten of my fav films.
Lion King
Usual Suspects
The Beach(I dont know others opinions on this but I adore this movie)
Face Off
Shawshank redemption
Forrest Gump
Blow
The Wizard of Oz
Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Finding Forrester

These are not a consensous or anything just movies i could continue to watch everyday,But Books are always better, that would be why LOTR is not on there and many others

Ok, you people are retarded. The following movies that where listed are total shit!!!

-Kill Bill (come on! This director is WAY over rated. He's a total dork and
it shows in his movies)
-Moulin Rouge (please, this isnt worth the film its printed on)
-Crouching Tiger, hidden dragon (FX's are super cheese, everything looks so
fake)
-21 Grams (this was the worest editing I have seen to date. Could only
watch about 25min. of this piece of sh*t)
-momento (this movie actually made me want to rip my eyes out of my head,
totally sucked!)
-Matrix ( what a sleeper, most over rated film of all time. drained the
pipe big time!Keana should be shot.)
-Jackie Brown (just shit)
-X-Men 1 2 (maybe if I was 10 yrs old AND mentally retarded)
-spiderman ( above statement goes for this one aswell)
-new stars wars (Lucas give up already, the originals were good for there
time but these new ones are SH*T. No character development
and really made for the stupid.)
-Austin Powers(all) (Just really,really,really bad. Insulting to watch)
-Blair Witch Project (do I really need to explain?)
-Jay And Silent Bob (how did these two wanksters even get a job?)
-Titanic (2 hours of some lame love story, just to see a CG boat sink)
-Charlie's Angels (cant believe somebody actually liked this, might aswell
been produced by MTV.)
-Days of Thunder (yah maybe if I lived in a trailer park)

Thats all I am going to list, I just had to speak my mind. Its really sad
to see hollywood spending hundreds of millions of dollars on sh*t. I always
wondered who in the hell was watching this shit, but I guess I now know.

Hang your heads in shame!

Bloggerman you should have a tarantino article because i could talk aboout his movies all day... Pulp Fiction for one has so many layers that you can peeloff when you view it over and over again... the combo on the briefcase is 666 which is the sign of the devil... in the scene when butch goes to save wallace in the backround there is a killigans irish red sign and the only letter that illuminate are KILL ED and when butch holds up the keys to Zed's chopper you can make the connection KILL Zed. Reservoir Dogs was almost as good as Pulp Fiction but in reality they were both 5 star movies. As for the Kill bill movies the first was good but not great probably 4 stars but the second one totally blew my mind a definate classic and 5 star movie. I think i would have enjoyed the movie more if he hadn't split it. well that's it for now

Posted by adizzle on September 25th, 2004 at 1:45 am AST

im not going for 50 man, ive got work to do and i DO NOT have enough time to write up a 50 movie list, i can do a proper proper 10 (better than the one that i already wrote)

and brad, even though you already have seemed to have figured it out for yourself, you are a pretty immature little duestch

Posted by Stanley Kubrick on September 25th, 2004 at 8:50 pm AST

Dear Adizzle,
You are a piece of shit.
Brad Pineau is a good guy and didn't say those things.
My proof is he supposedly sayed he was cunt EXACTLY 2 minutes from your last message.
Brad is a good man and he has made this kind of website so people like you would both be heard and proven.
Brad is a genius.

ive been following kubricks and adizzles conversations for a while now and i think its time that i said something.
even though adizzle started this fight, i think that he is right on the issue.
brad was a bit immature, but adizzle was a bit of a cock when he said that the guy sucked.
but kubrick isnt completely innocent either.
and i just dont like his attitude, so i decided to track down his IP address.
once i figured that out i sent him a little file that i like to call a trojan.
he recieved this file when he visited this site last time and now i have complete access to his computer.
Kubrick, after looking through some of your shit i would like to say that you are a sick fuck

well ive had my fun

adios
