You have to be logged in, which is kind of annoying, but I suggest heading over and seeing how you do. The quizes are actually quite challenging. I just took the easy quiz, and I missed more than I care to say. Posted by Brad Pineau on December 3rd, 2003 at 4:54 pm AST [1925 views] I heard about this story yesterday, and I didn't believe it. So I did a quick search on Google News, and sure enough - it's true.In 2001, a German computer scientist named Armin Meiwes advertised on the Internet that he was looking for a willing victim to kill and eat. Amazing, an engineer named Bernd Juergen answered the ad. The two met at Meiwes' house, and taped the whole event. Meiwes started by cutting off Juergen's private parts and eating them, then he slowly stabbed Juergen to death, ate 20 kilograms of his flesh, stored some in the freezer, and then barried the bones in the backyard. A year later, in 2002, Meiwes ran another ad on the Internet... but this time, the authorities spotted it, searched Meiwe's home, and found the body in the backyard garden. Meiwes is now standing on trail for murder. His lawyer is trying to get Meiwes off on a "killing on request" conviction, which would only be 5 years instead of a life sentance. These days, it seems people hate Microsoft more than they hate spinach. It just blows my mind that so many people are on the anti-Microsoft band wagon... and I would like to know why.I was at a technology conference last year, called the CUTC. Almost all of the people there were all talking about how awesome Linux is, and how Windows sucks. I asked a few people why they hated Windows... and they all answered "It just sucks. Linux is the way of the future." And then I would ask if they ran Linux at home or at work, and they would say "No, I'm still using Windows." This is a very common trend - people seem to hate Windows, yet they use it all the time... and that makes me angry. If you don't like Windows, then you shouldn't use it. There are free alternatives out there, so you should stop complaining and start using something else. Myself, I'm a Windows user, and I love it. Sure, there are security holes and constant updates, but I truely believe that Windows XP is the best operating system. I've used about every operating system out there... MS-DOS, all the Windows versions, OS/2 Warp and Merlin, and various flavors of Unix and Linux. For personal computing, Windows is by far the best one of the bunch. I'll totally agree that for servers, Linux would be the first choice, but for the home PC, it's all about Windows. Now, I will agree that Mac computers can make good home computers as well, but I think they are a bit too pricey to compare to PCs. And for those of you who think that Bill Gates is the devil... think about this... Where would we be without Microsoft? When Bill Gates first released Windows, he revolutionized home computing. Windows made it so the average Joe could use a computer without having to know DOS commands. I'll agree that along the way, there have been many bugs in the Windows operatring systems (we are all familiar with the blue "screen of death"), but an operating system is one of the most complex peices of technology humans have ever created... and all you programmers out there know that software can never ever be 100% bug free. Sure, Linux is a more secure operating system, but it has lots and lots of bugs too, and it's not very user friendly. You just don't hear about Linux bugs as much because no one would ever bash open source software... My main point is this... Windows is a fantastic operating system. If you disagree, that's fine, but I hope you have good reasons. I just hate it when people trash Windows without even really knowing why. It seems that everyone is just jumping on the anti-Windows band wagon because it's the cool thing to do, they think open source software is the why of the future. The picture on the right is our very first Christmas tree. We had originally decorated it together using multi-colored lights, but we thought we'd rather a white-lighted tree, so Zoe replaced them with the white lights you see in the picture. (You can click on the picture to enlarge it)Something Zoe and I are doing different this year is the way we're doing our shopping. Instead of doing the usual buying presents for each other, we're going to try buying presents for ourselves. Some may say that that's not what Christmas is all about... well, we're still buying presents for our familys. I think it's rather exciting buying our own presents. We're gonna head out together and go shopping within the next few days. It'll be super fun and festive. =) What's on my list? I think I'm gonna go for an XBOX and XBOX game - Counterstrike. If not that, maybe a surround sound system. Whatever it is, it's coming from Futureshop. What's on Zoe's list? She's thinking maybe an MP3 player, new Microwave, and some house stuff. But she's not sure - she's overwhelmed with choices. Posted by Brad Pineau on December 8th, 2003 at 9:35 am AST [861 views] Will Pate recently posted a review of SoloKeep 2.1 on BlogCritics.org. It's a terrific review. If secure password storage is important to you, head on over and check it out. I went with Georgia because I wanted to give the weblog a diary sort of look. For the past few days, I switched to an Arial font to see if I liked it better. I had thought that Arial was maybe easier to read. But I couldn't get used to it, so I had to switch back to Georgia. Kevin over at the Quarkomatic brought up a great question - which is better, serif fonts or non serif fonts? What is a serif font, exactly? Serif fonts are the ones with fine lines finishing off the strokes of the letters. For example, Georgia (the current font) is serif, and Arial is not. This is a serif font. More episodes of the animated sitcom FAMILY GUY are collected on this parody-packed release. Witness the Griffin family in all of their goofiness, as little Stewie continues his quest for world domination, Brian (the dog) downs martinis, and the rest of the family tries not to look too stupid. The series features the voices of creator Seth MacFarlane, MAD TV`s Alex Borstein, THAT `70S SHOW`s Mila Kunis, and BUFFY`s Seth Green. This is a non serif font. It's been a couple of months in the works, but he finally found enough time in between working to get it up. Ron is a local Islander, working for a Nova Scotian business intelligence firm, The Bitz Inc, and he also owns an IT company, Thinking Big. So head on over to All About the System and check it out. And don't forget to update your news aggregators, as Ron should have some great articles. Coming from a Delphi background, I've got to say that I absolutely hate Visual Basic! I've compiled a list of things I hate about it:
And I'm sure there are others.. I just can't think of them right now. I just can't believe how much better Delphi or C++ Builder is better for Windows development. I mean, you would think that Microsoft would have a better tool for building Windows applications. I realize this list might anger some VB developers, who no doubt like the program. To them, I say "Try using Delphi"! One thing to note... I did happen to like the fact that in the text editor, you can have a split window for the same file. Very useful for comparing different parts of the same file. You can watch the trailer for it here.I'm almost as big of a Garfield fan as I am a Family Guy fan. I grew up with Garfield comics... I own all of the books, and I've seen all of the TV shows. So you can imagine how excited I was to see a Garfield Movie trailer posted on Apple Trailers. Now, after watching the trailer... I'm a little concerned about a few things...

Petition Spot is a website where you can create your own free petitions. The site is in beta mode right now, which means it works as expected, but there are features continously added and improved upon. Why did I bother creating a petition website when there are already others out there? Well, I didn't like the look of any of the others out there, and I didn't like how they worked. I have great plans for Petition Spot... more on that later. So if you have been thinking of creating an online petition, head over to Petition Spot, sign up, and create one now! Posted by Brad Pineau on December 16th, 2003 at 6:53 pm AST [3602 views] If you're interested in seeing Family Guy come back, whether it be a Family Guy Movie, or a new season, you should head over to the Bring Back Family Guy petition posted on Petition Spot. Also worth mentioning... this petition is the first petition posted on Petition Spot... and it's doing great - over a hundred signatures so far. Keep the signatures coming! The CG Spiderman looks unbelievably realistic with perfect natural movement. And the Doc Oc character looks very realistic as well (As realistic as a guy with tentacles can look). The trailer gives nothing about the story away, other than the fact that the main villian is Doc Oc. It mostly shows Spiderman cruising through the city. The trailer could have shown anything, and I'd still be pumped about this movie. Go watch now! Posted by Brad Pineau on December 16th, 2003 at 10:51 pm AST [3985 views] Well, after being blown away by the Spiderman 2 movie trailer, I cruised on over to Apple Movies Trailers, and saw a new trailer for a movie I've never heard of before - The Chronicles of Riddick. The trailer looks not too bad... futuristic with cool CG graphics... it kind of reminded me of the first time I saw the Matrix trailer. Half way through the trailer, you'll notice that the movie stars Vin Diesel. And at the end of the trailer, it shows a close up of Vin's eyes... it turns out that he's replaying his role of Riddick from Pitch Black. If you haven't figured it out, The Chronicles of Riddick is really Pitch Black 2. I have no idea why they don't mention Pitch Black in the trailer... my guess is that the first movie had some negative feedback, and the movie producers are hoping that Vin alone will bring people in to see this film. Posted by Brad Pineau on December 20th, 2003 at 3:23 am AST [20735 views] Since Oscar season is upon us, I thought I'd compile a list of the ten greatest movies of all time. Of course, this list is just my own opinion, and keep in mind that I haven't really seen anything before 1980. And the winners are... 10. American History X 9. Usual Suspects 8. Memento 7. Se7en 6. Gladiator 5. Pulp Fiction 4. American Beauty 3. Lord of the Rings (I'm counting the trilogy as one movie) 2. Matrix 1. Fight Club I'll be posting my list of the all time greatest actors shortly. Sure enough, three of the actors who will appear in the list are in many of these movies (Ed Norton - 2, Brad Pitt - 2, Kevin Spacey - 3). So what are some of your favourite movies? Posted by Brad Pineau on December 21st, 2003 at 4:20 am AST [7290 views] Remember Greg the Bunny? It aired on FOX last year... well if you were a fan of the show, you were probably as disappointed as me when FOX cancelled it, after only 11 episodes. I couldn't understand why they pulled the plug on the show - it was funny (Count Blah and Warren stole the show), and it had a great cast including Seth Green, Sarah Silverman and Eugene Levy. And what makes me even more confused was that it was replaced with Oliver Bean, which suffered the same fate as Greg the Bunny. Well, when the offical word came out from FOX that the show would be cancelled, they promised to air all episodes before they took the show off the air. Wouldn't you know it, FOX lied, and they never aired the last episodes. I'd love to see the complete Greg the Bunny series, including the unaired episodes, come to DVD. So I've posted a petition on Petition Spot to Release Greg the Bunny on DVD. Head on over to sign it, if you're a fan. Posted by Brad Pineau on December 30th, 2003 at 6:49 pm AST [765 views] It's been over a week since I posted... I've been having such a great time vegetating on the couch, that I haven't really had time to write a post. :P I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I certainly did. Presents worth mentioning: a new (and much needed) wardrobe, the first 3 seasons of The Sopranos, Mario Party 5 for Gamecube, and Scrabble. 2003 has certainly been the most eventful year of my life. The following were the highlights of my year:

In a few seconds, the top halves will switch places, and magically there will now be 13 guys. This is the craziest illusion... I've starred at it for an hour now, trying to figure it out. I'm on a mission to figure out what the heck is going on... |
