interesting. sometimes maybe we leave tips because it's something that has always been done - learn it from our parents, etc. now, personally, i don't think tipping is morally wrong. the people who we tip (hairdressers, pizza boys, waitresses etc) are doing a more personal service or a service for convience, which does merit a bit more gratitude. i worked at wal-mart for close to three years, i didn't get tips, but i got great compliments. i also gave my best service to every customer in that god-forsaken hell hole, but i never expected tips. i wasn't extending to the customer a personal service. i was simply there to guide. i guess basically what i'm tyring to say here (and this is a late night post, it probably doesn't make sense) people who convience us should be shown monetary gratitude. we could do it ourselves, but someone else is offering. thank them through money, cuz that's whats the most important thing in life, right?? I see where you're coming from with this, nelly... but isn't it their job to make things convienient for us? Isn't that what they were hired for? It's not like they are going out of their way to do things for us.. things that aren't in their job description. If that were the case, I would have no problem leaving a tip, because they went above and beyong the call of duty...

I understand that tending to crabby customers all day can mentally frustrate a person, and tipping can help make up for the crap they take,.. but working on an assembly line can be a pretty crappy job too, and those people don't get any tips from anyone.

People working in these professions typically make rock-bottom wages before we tip them. I think that may have something to do with it.

We don't tip salespeople, but many of them earn commission, like those at Futureshop... at least on extended warranties - I'm not sure about regular purchases.

In the U.S. there is a different (lower) minimum wage for service workers in hospitality, and wages generally reflect the assumption of tipping. Moreover there are devices and requirements by which employers in this sector must "impute" tips for income tax reporting purposes. They are either reported directly or assumed, calculated, and reported anyway.

I've moonlighted a few nights a week as a bartender for many years (freelancers need something to count on). I can tell you that I don't insist on tips but that they are also not optional. In most cases they represent the bulk of earnings.

It's a very complicated social construct, one I'll write about in detail some day. Suffice it that your relationship to hospitality providers -- especially those you do business with regularly -- is solidified and grows based on proper tipping.

I teach my daughters how it's done in a restaurant setting:

1. Round the check to an even dollar amount.
2. Double the result (200%).
3. Divide that result by two (20%).
4. Add that back to the original check amount.
5. Round that total down a little if the server (not the kitchen or establishment in general) was inattentive, but not much.

Do this consistently, smile and speak with service folks as peers, and you'll make many friends. The benefit always comes back to you, and the world turns just a little easier because of it.

Above all, don't be a silly geek who ponders the socio-economic efficacy of tipping, anywhere beyond the abstract. That's the road to loser-land. Cheap is cheap, always will be.

okay, i know all about this, as i am an esthetician. really, i dont like to tip people myself unless they give not just great service, but amazing service. i mean, the kind of service that you would go home and say, "that was the best service i have had in a long long time!" and i try to give that type of service. it never really bothered me if someone didnt tip me, becuase i know when i do my best and when i dont. but it WOULD bother me if the client was twenty minutes late, annoying as hell, and then didnt tip if i gave her great service. that's a bit much. i agree with kevin about the whole commission thing. really, commissions are like tips, just given by the companies. i make commission where i work now, and its way better than tips. anyhow, my whole point is that when someone tips you, its not only extra money, but it really makes you feel good. like you made an impact on them. and when someone doesnt tip, you dont think, "damn, i could have used the extra $$$" you think "what did I do wrong? I hope they were happy with what i did..."

I agree with Lou in the sense that U.S. tipping is meant to compensate for their measly wages. That was always part of my understanding.

Tipping is also a very North American tradition. Many countries (Australia, England, as well as some other European countries) don't insist on tipping for services rendered; and often times it is common practice not to tip.

That said, I do try to tip well (within my meager means). Having worked in the hospitality industry myself I know how it can really make your day for someone to leave more than you expected for good service.

Well, I have an answer to why you tip the pizza delivery man - they don't get compensated for their job by their employer. They get minimum wage plus *maybe* 85 cents per run. That is not enough to cover wear and tear on a car. That is why they advertise the job saying you get paid hourly (if your lucky and work at big chains and they still get only minimum wage) plus TIPS. The employers assume they will be tipped. If the employer paid them $15 an hour, everything would be hunky doory but your pizza would cost $40 or some such to cover all the costs. Do you want to pay that for an essentially 'fast food' type of pizza? If you can afford $16 for a pizza, you surely can afford a $2.00 tip.

It is true that in SOME states there is a lower minimum wage for service industry workers. In Oregon, for example, it has been my experience that restaurant staff is still paid the state's minimum wage and tips are above and beyond that. So I agree that I do not feel it is my job to make up this employee's measly wage. Afterall if I'm paying 8.00 for a burger, I think I've already done my civic duty to pump money into the local economy. But in all honesty my point of view can be summed up in the cafe discussion at the beginning of Resevoir Dogs(I side with Mr. Pink).

I am not afraid to leave no tip, I was brought up that tips are EARNED and not mandatory. I do not care about being friends with service workers(that does not mean that I am not friendly though), afterall if I go to a restaurant and I leave no tip, chances are I'm not coming back, or if I do, I'm not going to be served by the same person.

Now on the flip side though, when I do tip, I tip well. Afterall it was earned. I do make sure to assess the situation though and make sure that I'm not expecting complete attention if the section the employee has to cover is packed, but there are things they can do to impress me.

But this was just my 2 cents, take it for what it is worth.

Obviously you HAVE NEVER worked in the restuarant industry. I have been waiting tables for the past four years to support myself through college. First let me tell you a little something. It is perfectly legal, and a commom practice in almost all restaurants, to pay their servers less than three dollars per hour. WE WORK VERY HARD FOR OUR MONEY, and thank god most people are not like you. I come into work every day with a positive attitude, take unbelivable tormant from crabby customers, and give service with a smile.

Speaking for myself only, I work to EARN my tips, and if I fail to give my guest a pleasant experience, then I do not expect a good tip. However, being a server is a very hard job, and I manage to do it six days a week, during terrible hours, and make a pleasant connection with each guest that sits down at my table.

Servers are running around constantly during their shift to please their guests, get them every little special request that they desire, and NEVER get a break, literally. I have never in my history of waiting tables recieved even a fifteen minute break.
Now, tell me once more why you feel that it is morraly wrong to leave a tip?

Well, if you're in the restuarant industry, you are obviously biased... and of course you will think that tipping is great. Now, I have several points to make.

First, as stated above, I do leave tips, and I usually top well, most of the time in the 20% range. But keep in mind that I only tip because it's a social norm and I like to be nice, not because I think it's necessarily the right thing to do.

Second, I'm sorry if you think I'm an asshole for saying that tipping is "morally wrong". I should have chosen my words a little better... I guess I meant that it doesn't seem fair that some people get tips and others don't.

Third, to strengthen my second argument, think about this. I have a friend who works at a call centre. He gets crapped on every night by customers... but he always has to keep patient and be nice at all times. But he never gets tips. What makes a restuarant worker more deserving to get tips than other people in more stressful occupations?

As for the call centre thing, well I've been there, done that, still doing it. The reason we tip the customer service people is mainly the wages. People who work in call centers tend to make twice as much hourly money as someone who is working for minimum wage delivering pizza or waiting tables. As I understand it, Tipping is largely because of the poor wages. I usually tip well if the person is really nice, prompt, etc, or if the person is a girl and she's really cute... :D

And don't give me that crap about good service in a restaurant. Do you mean to tell me that if I go into a good restaurant the waiter is going to know,BEFOREHAND, that I will or will not leave a tip. No they will simply bring me my food and then ,because their employer pays them minimum wage , they hope I will make up the difference with a tip. If there is no tip left they wil get angry after the bill is paid. This shows that the tip is expected and not necessarily earned. How else was I going to get my food. Go in the kitchen and pick it up myself. Go to any counter service business and ask for a product that they keep behind the counter out of reach. The counter person will give you the product,that you are going to pay for and that is it. Go in a donut shop and ask for a coffee to go. The person pours the coffee and gives it to you. Why should you have to pay for the coffee and pay to have it served to you? TIPPING SUCKS and is simply a method whereby employers reduce their costs. EXAMPLE you are in a restaurant that sells a steak dinner for normally $21.95. But because this eater has a rule of no tipping the price on the menu is $24.95. You don't know the difference and the $3.00 differnce is given to the waiter. This would be the same for all the listing on the menu . At the end of the meal when the bill arrives you are more than happy to pay because there is no extra tip to pay and the waiter still made his extra money. Also the employers should offer incentives to the waiters to sell drinks ,wines desserts etc and and again they would share the extra money. TIPPING IS AN EASY WAY FOR EMPLOYERS TO PAY LOW SALARIES AND MAKE MORE MONEY.You pay $8.00 for a drink at a barand the bartender still expects you to leave him a tip for giving you the drink. In Brasil, the tip is normally 10% at the restaurants,and in the state of Rio de Janeiro,which i live,you HAVE to give the tip(is a law,and the restaurant can sue you),which is divided between the waiter and the persons that doesn't work with the costumers-the people who cook,clean the dishes,etc-.The wages of a waiter in USA are the wages of a executive,compared to a brazilian waiter,but this law is ridicule.

I can understand why people don't like to tip and think they are only paying for services other people, whom you are not expected to tip, do without thought of recompensation.
Because it became commonplace to tip waiters in restaurants, other people who give personal serv ice now expect tips (i.e. hairdressers, barristas, etc.) Unlike cofffee shop workers and hairdressers, I, as a waitress do NOT make minimum wage or slightly above it. I make $2.13 per hour and there is nothing left after taxes in my check. So my sole money comes froms tips and only tips (unless you think it is possible to live off the $18.00 check i get every other week. While you may not like the practice it has been going on for decades in our society. THe only way to change this is to make tipping unacceptable...If servers were to be paid on the same level as your local 7-11 employee all the food in every restaurant would cost twice as much. Restaurants keep their prices as low as possible and still make a profit. As for the tech support call center people, whom I agree take a lot of crap, they get paid at least $8-10 per hour and more than likely get more than 35 hours per week. They can support themselves on their salary without tips.
By the way...for those of you who do not tip waiters because you dont think you should have to...you also dont have to go out...since tipping a waiter is a common and expected practice in this society it is extremely unfair to "stiff" someone because you are cheap...you understand the practices of this society...if you dont like them..do NOT put yourself in a position where you have to tolerate them (i.e. going out to dinner) DOnt want to cook? Then get Takeout. If you dont tip because your protesting the practice...you only hurt the server who waited on you and have done nothing to change the practice. Every time soemone stiffs me -- it costs me money, Servers generally have to "tip out" 2.5- 3.0% of their total sales to bartenders and busboys...So when you dont tip me I still have to pay someone else on the amount of money your bill amounted to.
Bitching about the common practice of tipping does nothing to change the practice..it just encourages people to not tip...i hope none of my customers have been reading your opinions.

Well, since last I posted, I've gotten another job. I'm a server on board amtrak trains, much like a waitress in a restaurant, in the dining car on the 'long haul' trains. Its very nice!

Ahem, anyways. Can you believe that people STILL stiff wait staff on board the trains? Not only do we work about 18 hours in a row with very little time off in between meal periods much like servers everywhere, but we eat, sleep, and live on board these trains for 4-6 days at a time! No family, no friends, no fun time at all during these times. And people still stiff or leave terrible tips.

Its a damn good thing we don't get paid minimum wage :P If you are a server or bartender, check out http://jobs.amtrak.com if you'd like to appyly for a job on amtrak. Haha. it does suck when you get people who do not appreciate you, but there are more people who do, which is always pleasent.

Do you KNOW how much doctors, lawyers, priests, policemen, and people with the same jobs, actually MAKE? You are OBLIGATED to pay them so much money because they are CHARGING for their services.

Maybe waiters, waitresses and pizza delivery drivers should add an extra surcharge for their services rendered? Because if you don't tip them, you are stealing their services (they aren't being nice to you for nothing! TIP = to insure promptness. Next time they see you in their section or your house address comes up and they know you don't tip, don't expect better service...)
You might start cooking for yourself then mate, if you were obligated to pay it instead of doing it out of the goodness of your heart ;)

BTW...If you still pizza delivery drivers, don't forget this one essential peice of information. They have your address, your phone number, and heaven forbid, your credit card number and experation date. Lets just hope if you do stiff them, that they have good moral characters. I worked at a pizza place, and all my chums were good people (it would have been quite easy to do nasty things to the people that stiffed them every time!).

And how about people who force you to pay tips.

e.g.
I deliberately didn't leave any tips for the maid on the first night of my hotel stay and guess what, I found out my remote was not working (because the maid replaced it with a faulty one). My room window was left open to let all the cold in when I returned and there were no tissues left in toilet. And this was a $200/day hotel, not something cheap.
I got a nice working remote and toilet tissues when I tipped the day after

I am sure the tip thing is a menace and has gone too far. People
have started forcing customers into tipping using such tactics. Everybody thinks their normal job is actually extra service and without tips they only give below normal service. It would be definitely better to have a legal 10-20% service charge added to your bills and abolish the tips.

Actually adding a service charge would even aggravate the problem since people would still expect tips....just outrageous.

I normally tip on special occasions out (most normally, a dinner in the evening) since this is a luxury, a special meal with wine etc, an "evening out". During such occasions I base my tip on the level of service -- for terrible service, I tip nothing. For standard service, I'll normally tip around 10%. For excellent service, I will tip very graciously upwards of 25% sometimes, especially if we have a large table of people and the server has done a fantastic job of taking care of us. I truly believe the tip should be a reward for, and should promote, service above and beyond.

For lunch meals during the workday, I normally don't tip as I feel this is a "necessity", a basic lunch, a working man eating his lunch, done day in and day out, and as such is really part of my cost of just earning my living (ie, I gotta eat lunch every day!) However if I do feel the server has done a great job, more than just what is "expected" of them, I will certainly leave a tip.

I like the idea of choice and freedom. People choose to work certain jobs and know what to expect by making that choice. People also have the choice and freedom to leave a tip or not as they see fit. I like that! And I also really like the idea of a great job deserving extra pay, and a rotten job getting it's excellent and well deserved just reward ;)

As to the comments about "societal norms" and "tipping to be nice" -- I would recommend to everyone to make up their own mind, don't let others pressure you! Just my two cents!

I had to make a 10-15 minute presentation on the issue of wolrd hunger and poverty, and when I explained my view, a lot of people were quite interested and actually decided to lean on my side. That tipping is just a way for employers to have an excuse to pay their service people a less wager for their job.

Unfortunetly, comparing the tipping of waiters to the donating of monies to 3rd world countries is like...Pardon the cliche, comparing apples and oranges. If you don't like tipping, stop the practice and make restaurants charge the full amount for their meals. Mhhmm - Domino's Pizza, cheese only, for lets say, $35. Sound good eh?

Industry survival is not dependent on tipping but sales and profits. So when things start costing 2-3 times, alternatives are discovered/invented. Tipping is basically an expression of satisfaction of the service received above expectation.

Eh, if restaurants started paying thier servers what they are worth (how they still get away with only paying them just enough to cover taxes, I'll never understand...Who wants to make 2.00 or so an hour, and depend on the tips? Not me! sorry I digress...) your meals would cost A LOT more.

And unfortunetly, I don't think there would be any alternative save paying their servers only $2.15 or so an hour again. Which means, you had better well tip your waiter or waitress. If you go back to the same place chances are you will get the same server - and they remember if you don't tip or not.

I tip very well. I've learned that if you tip well, it doesn't matter what you look like (i.e. GOTH) you will still get damn good service, because the person knows you tip well (and I do not 'run' my servers, either). If I get shitty service, I give exactly 15% of the bill as the tip. That way the jackasses will know I will tip next time I see them. If I happen to get the same person next time and their attitude is still shitty, I will not tip and I will notify a manager.

If I get good service, I'll do 20-25% of the bill as a tip. If I get uber great service, I'll do $20 even. I don't go out to fancy restaurants just family type restaurants, but since by nature I dress dark/gothic, sometimes you get assholes who think negatively and who stereotype for some lame ass reason. My favorite restaurant is Friday's out in Merrillville, IN - the people there are always so nice!

I come from another country where tips don't exist, just people doing their work in a proper manner. For me tips are wrong. I don't think that people have to receive tips for doing their work, even if they do it efficiently. People in the US are so accustomed to give tips that now it is a sin if you don’t do it. I think that people of this country learn to be compensated since they are in the school. The teacher always given something extra for the effort children do. When I was a student I did receive gratification, my grades, where my effort where reflected. I know that many people don’t earn enough money like waitresses, for instance, but that is the fault of the people who hire them to do the job. Have you think how much money restaurants make based on their employees? So, start from there.

Gabcho, the problem is that waitresses are paid roughly $2.15 an hour in the United States, so they depend on their tips to make their hourly wages. They don't even get paid a minimum wage. That $2.15 goes towards the taxes they would pay - therefore they don't see THAT money.

It is a nice idea that we should start with our restaurants, but it would be very hard to try to make a law that states waitresses should be paid what they are worth.

I make a good amount of money per hour working on the trains, but I also get tips. If I didn't make the amount of money I do make (and seriously, I should get paid more for this job...) I wouldn't work this. I am away from home, family, and everything for six days at a time. I can't just saunter on down to the local bar after my 19 hour shift (the 2nd and 5th days are the killers...) all I can do is go to my little room and sleep, to wake up again at 5 am to open my cafe back up at 6 am XD A LOT of people can't handle the job I have. Thus why I get tipped for it. Would you like to go 3 days on a train which offers no meal service at all? thats a lot of extra food and drink to carry on the train with you!

Speaking from a Canadian perspective, we DO have a minimum wage that means just that. You can not be paid less than it per hour legally. It's currently $6.80 /hr where I live . We don't tier our jobs so some get the wage and some don't. That makes no sense. It also makes no sense to call it minimum wage if someone is making less per hour don't you think? (but I digress).
The fact that serving staff still obviously expect tips here kind of deflates the arguments that wait staff live off of their tips. Some bartenders I know make well over $100 a night in tips and get paid an hourly wage as well. During the busy summer tourist trap season, many waitresses make out similarly and coast trough the lean months of the year on their summer loot.
I personally think the entire tipping scheme is outmoded and divisive. Why tip a waitress and not the fellow who pumped your gas or did your drycleaning?

It angers me that people dont understand the concept of tipping. I am a waiter. My employer pays me $4.00 an hour. I live in NY. That is below minimum wage. On top of that i am expected to tip the bartender 5% of my bar sales, 1.5% of my sales go to the people at the door seating, .5%of my sales go to the salad bar attendant, bus boys and foodrunners get 1%. from me. if i am stiffed, its actually costing me money to serve you. if your bill is $100 and i get no tip, i'm tipping out $4 plus any bar drinks. My shifts sometimes run 10 hours without a break and if we didnt get tips i dont think that there would be many people choosing a waitering job. It seems easy but at times it's very difficult....i do think that if the service you get sucks, leave a bad tip. but at least not be upset that you have to tip the good servers. if there was no tipping i'm sure that prices would be much hire b/c i dont know any waiter or waitress that would work for less than $15 an hour, as compared to our $4 an hour plus tips...i give everyone my best service becuase you do not know who is gonna tip or not. if you give a bad tip i think you should leave a not about what was wrong with the service. also i dont think people know but to-go servers should be tipped a dollar or two, especially if they bring your food out to your car because they are getting minimum wage too. Also i dont know if everyone knows this but the IRS expects us to get tipped at least 8% of our sales AFTER tip out. we are taxed on at least 8% of our sales which comes out of our paycheck. some weeks my paycheck is $10......if yall dont wanna tip, go to fast food, the cashier spends 30 seconds on you and that what you pay for.

Because in the United States, some restaurants and places like that get away with paying their servers as low as $2.15 an hour (I know some who make that much) because they assume they will be tipped (which is still wrong), although you KNOW they will not change the system. If they were actually forced to pay servers and delivery drivers (like pizza delivery drivers) what they were worth, those businesses would go OUT of business. Haha.

BTW, all gas stations in the US are pretty much self serve now. And as for the drycleaning, they get paid for their jobs, unlike waitresses.

You need to use that space above your neck a wee bit more often.
